Look what followed me home today......new addition to the stable!

It's an '87 VRF 700 Interceptor. Picked up from CL - about an hour drive, each way. Missing both sides front fairings - but discounted a fair amount off selling price so that will help fund replacements.

To save time, I just will tell you the final selling price was $900.

Details:
  • ~68K on the clock
  • Was running when owner parked it last year, according to him
  • Has an issue with lock for fuel tank on top so will have to get new one of those
  • Original paint (this was one of 2 colors offered from factory)
  • Tires look good - charging battery right now
  • Has owner's manual and tool kit
  • Corbin seat (so guess that's aftermarket - will find an original for it at some point as this one looks a bit funky)

Overall I think she "looks" pretty good for her age!

Let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise will post again when I get her running.

Some of you know I have another one of these, also an '87) in a "speed yellow" re-paint. It's in the garage with a non-functioning clutch and I have not ridden it in a few years, but hoping to get her back going this year as well.

I know not everyone thinks this is a great model but I love them. I especially like the vintage aspect, if that makes any sense.

Nice score Baz, can’t beat that price either. Ride in good health.

Thank you, Rutager! SmileWavy

Rode a 500 Interceptor for awhile. Then had the use of a 1000 for a couple of years. Heavy beast that.

Nice find. The one with gear driven cams? I think that was the later 750.

speeder 04-12-2018 06:05 PM

VFRs are great, I've had a couple. Pretty sure that's a 2nd Gen bike w gear driven cams? I almost bought a '99 VFR 800 over in Ireland last summer, that would be the last pre-V-tech.

And yeah, it needs a chain. :)

Only the first gen had a cam chain, then all gear-driven until the V-techs.

VincentVega 04-12-2018 06:38 PM

Cool bike

I had a later 750 for a while, really should have kept it. Did everything well.

Baz 04-12-2018 06:44 PM

Yes - 2nd Gen.

Was just flipping through the owner's manual and found some entries in the service log.

First entry is 5-26-87, odometer 1047, maintenance by Honda of Gardena.

This is a California bike!

herr_oberst 04-12-2018 07:31 PM

I like the looks of those and always have. Good color, too. Hopefully the missing bodywork isn't too hard to find! (You should probably lean towards a more aggressive chain maintenance schedule than the PO, though.)

Bill Douglas 04-12-2018 07:37 PM

The good thing about two of the same is you can register and get plates for one, and swap them over.

tevake 04-13-2018 03:00 AM

Good score Baz! I like that color. Should clean up nicely. Replace the chain and exhaust pipes and most of the rust is gone. Check the dates on those tires.

You are going to end up with a sweet pair of bikes.

Cheers Richard

epbrown 04-13-2018 03:27 AM

Nice! I've always liked the Interceptor. That model must be from the Harley tariff years...

Baz 04-13-2018 04:31 AM

Thanks for all the compliments and comments, guys.....really appreciate it!

That's funny about swapping the plates, Bill....lol....

You know here in Florida my bike is considered an "antique" and buying and registering it is less expensive, too. I have "antique" plates on all my stuff except my work truck. :)

varmint 04-13-2018 09:56 AM

Great bike. Gonna be tough finding intact fairings.

Scott Douglas 04-13-2018 10:43 AM

I wouldn't be too quick in getting rid of that corbin saddle. Clean it up and try it out, you might be surprised.
I'd love to find a project like this too, 'cept I'd probably get killed around here the locals being such as they are driving wise.

URY914 04-13-2018 10:50 AM

"ran when parked......

;):D:p:(SmileWavy

Good luck with that one.

vash 04-13-2018 11:05 AM

i had a 1984 500 Interceptor. fun bike.

that 750 is gonna come out nice once you get it cleaned up. have you started it?

and that chain is a scooch rusty.

LakeCleElum 04-13-2018 11:21 AM

Well I picked up a couple front fairings from eBay today. The ones that are missing. Will have to do some slight repair work on them and repaint them but should work out. Also have a new battery coming - the old one didn't take a charge - no surprise.

Still trying this figure out how to get this cap off without buggering up the tank.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523674451.JPG

Baz 04-22-2018 11:37 AM

My fairings arrived Thursday. They will need some work, of course. I have a full set from my other bike so just need to get the kit from Polyvance and methodically do the repairs. Then re-paint.

Also got a new battery - a gel style.

Still haven't been able to get cap off fuel tank so going to bypass at least to get her started and running.

Here are the fairings:

Does the gas cap housing not come off the tank when you remove the five allen head screws ? Then you can work the cap issue at the work bench ? It probably is not that easy but I had to ask .

No - cap does not come off when 5 screws removed - in fact that ring does not come off. It's hinged at the back to the whole assembly.

Here are a few pics of what it looks like from underneath (I got these pics from an eBay auction).

I've already decided to let my mechanic handle this - and in the meantime I'll hook a portable tank up to the outlet line going to the fuel pump just so I can get her running, before I take it to him.

Will post updates as appropriate......:p

rfuerst911sc 04-22-2018 04:56 PM

Well that stinks ! Good luck getting that sorted . Your post made me do a quick search and I came up with this one local to me.............. hmmm :D

Craigslist is best left alone at this time of year...

I prefer the older VFR's myself but different strokes for different folks, right?

Those older ones in red, white, and blue livery are way cool......

Baz 04-23-2018 04:34 PM

Regarding the fuel tank cap problem, I just bought a used tank that looked to be in pretty good shape for this year VFR.

It has a working cap and keys....plus I'm getting the matching ignition and helmet lock.

Seemed to be the best approach on this situation.

Scott Douglas 04-23-2018 06:22 PM

Baz - After you posted that you got that last one, I went looking on the local c-list here. Found a 1000 VFR that was really nice out in Palm Springs. Sure wish I still could afford to ride.

Hang in there, Scott.....you never know what the future holds. The key is to be patient and keep an eye out on Craigslist (or any other marketplace)...there are deals to be made! SmileWavy

^^^ Good that they have all the fairings and covers but not sure I'd go for that one....

Quick update......found the graphics I needed:

https://moto-sticker.com/

The only decal that isn't right is the "750F" above the rear wheel instead of the correct "Interceptor".

https://moto-sticker.com/Honda-VFR-750-1988-DARK-BLUE-VERSION-STICKER-SET

I'll deal with it.....ordered 2 sets!

drcoastline 04-24-2018 03:24 PM

I think they all look good, but... you won't catch my azz on one. Might mess up my pretty face or worserer yet I might get kilt.

I thought them Ducs was expensive?
