Came pretty close to heading to Mexico last year for family vacation before looking at updated statistics. A few years ago the border towns were the concern, now it’s everywhere.

Even before this kind of stuff started happening south of the border.
Mexico always registered as a "S hole" place to me.
I go to Hawaii for beautiful beaches.

My wife has also asked me about Mexico. Costco has great deals. This was my hesitation. And I grew up in a 3rd world country!

This is why assault jet-skis need to be banned.

When I lived San Diego in the '80's, Mexico was a safe, open book.

Pity it has become hard. I drove Rt 1/10/3 to Ensenada and beyond many times, camped and surfed and surfed kayaked the whole stretch.

I have seldom felt more welcomed anywhere.

My shift partner went to Cancun last week for vacation. I remember telling him "You should be safe there". I wonder if he'll have any cartel stories when he get's back Wednesday.

In 2009 I spent a month driving around Mexico. Had a great time and met some wonderful people. I did stay away from schools and Waffle Houses though.

After many years of family vacations in Mexico, we quit. In addition to violence, tainted alcohol, risky and expensive medical treatment (often coordinated between the resort and local doctor/hospital), and theft have become the norm. This year we went to Belize and had a fantastic time! We rented this island (Little Harvest Caye) that has five bungalows, staff, boats and a golf cart on the mainland for less than the price of ten people in an adults only all inclusive in Mexico. We had a blast! We have rented a similar “home” in Costa Rica for next March.

Yep, now do the math on an adult, all inclusive at $400 and up per night per person. For ten people, we typically spend ~$25k for a week. Add in food and drinks to Belize and you have a comparable price for a better and more intimate family experience. Superior in every way.

What hurts more than paying that is... when you have to leave.

Staying in a hotel in Rosarita Beach (Baja) once for work, the receptionist at the hotel lobby told me not to leave valuables in the hotel room.

I just stayed a week in Cancun a month ago, at Live Aqua (3 km) from Riu. It was beautiful. we (felt) safe. Before the trip, I searched and searched for info about violence in the area, and what I found was only gang on gang, and not in or near any tourist areas. We did see an increased police presence over when I was there 2 years ago. Few patrols a day on the beach with trucks or ATV, trucks at entrances to hotel zone, and patrol cars everywhere. The trucks I mention were F150's with 2 officers in the cab, and at least 2 in the back, both with rifles.

The food was great, the drinks were great, the beach was great, the whole experience was great.

I won't be going back until stuff calms down a bunch.

I wonder if this is the "New" cartel way. They may be switching from "drugs" to "protection rackets".

"This is a really nice hotel. You wouldn't want sumpin to happen to it." - Give us 10% of your income, or we shoot up your beach, or something like that.
