ingredient listings: 'date'
I'm obsessed with these cookies from Aldi. They last maybe a few hours in my house. Soft, sweet, better than grandma's and no unnatural crap in them except for this mysterious ingredient: 'date'. What in the world is 'date'? Like ground up dates? Then why not list them as dates? Maybe date sugar? But then it should be listed as such. Tried emailing Aldi to find out what this ingredient is and no response 3 times now. And all 3 varieties of cookies have 'date' listed. Anyone have a clue or know where to find out what exactly date is?

Something to do with dates, for sure. Given that it's so far down the list, I doubt it matters whether it's ground dates or something else from a date.
I'd be surprised if I could actually taste something that far down the list. EDIT: it looks like "date sugar" is cooked, ground-up dates... So I'm going with.... dates... Last edited by javadog; 05-02-2018 at 08:14 AM.. |

They only use one date, hence the singular form of the word.

Well, I've never heard it referred to as "baking oil", either.

My favorite cookies that my Grandma used to give me (45 years ago) were Archway brand "Date filled" cookies...everything you just mentioned. Not sure if they are still available.
