Online spoon stores
I think I have narrowed down WHAT I want to buy.
I presume GunBroker is the great granddaddy of all the online gun shops? I have looked at cheaper than dirt but they don't seem to have as big of a selection. Guns America, Tombstone, sportsman. But I keep going back to GB, they seem to have the best prices. Same with parts, grips, springs, parts, best most reliable place to buy those? Thanks, Scott

Have purchased through gunbroker and Buds Gun Shop.
I'd check both.

GB is a complete no brainer....make sure you factor in the FFL costs on your end!
I have bought a few spoons via GB, which have all been lost in unfortunate boating accidents.

Gunbroker is Ebay of guns. Lots of different sellers. And lots of the people there are dealers, but many are individuals.
If you want to go to a specific dealer for online, it all depends. But most of the time Buds Gun Shop is the lowest.

On some private GB sales there is a FFL charge from seller and then again for buyer, depending on state/ local laws.
Some areas only a FFL can ship a firearm. FFL + expensive shipping + FFL again and the deal is ruined. GB dealers or Armslist work well for me.

There are a ton of sites with dirt cheap guns - CDNN, AIM Surplus, J&G, gun.deals, etc. Then you have the classifieds on the various Glock and SIG forums. Gunbroker can be great. But there's no sniping there. Any last second bid extends the auction by 15 more minutes and that can go on indefinitely. I put a late night, drunken, lowball bid on a 1911 I was sure I'd never win. When I woke up, there was a "congratulations" email. So there are deals there.
FWIW, you can buy everything but a lower receiver and a >10 round mag on eBay and Amazon, get free shipping and no sales tax right to your door. And you can even buy 80% lower receivers on those sites and bypass the FFL. I did my last 80% build up in about an hour and had it running at the range the same day.

I don't know, I sort of like buying from a shop up the street. I sort of like having a shop to buy from right up the street.
Also, as Randy points out above, GD Kalifornia I swear I will never purchase another firearm until I leave this accursed place and return to Texas

I have sold about a dozen rifles on Gunbroker and I make the buyer check with a local FFL (does NOT have to be a gun retail shop) and they contact me with either a letter or a copy of their FFL license. If the rifle or handgun is a muzzle loader and can never be easily modified to use a cartridge in most cases no FFL is required. In that case their FFL tells me their states laws in the letter mentioned. A copy of the FFL paperwork has to be included in the box and a code(forget what) on the outside tells UPS it is in there. As noted there are companies and individuals selling. If it is a business you can find their address and telephone number in their info and can Google it to see what their local history is like.
Since you live in CA I would talk with a local shop and in some cases they do not like doing the paperwork as it does go in their record binder and is open to a possible issue when inspection time comes. In the San Diego are in the last 5 years there have been 5 gun stores/FFL holders shut down due to paperwork issues. In all the cases they reopen with a new owner and FFL holder with the same name as before. I use a FFL who has been in business for 40 years and never had a problem. You can also look at the CA Dept. of Justice website to see what the new laws have changed and whatever you do, DO NOT use an AZ or NV address to get a drivers license and then bring the gun over here. They are doing some firearms inspections (Sheriffs) at the Border Patrol check points. We recently had 8 of our black powder shooters go to a regional match north of Phoenix and they had to show their pistols (flint locks) and rifles (percussion and Flinters) to the sheriff that was there. The ICE agent asked where they came from and what their business was.....bingo...pull over please. |

Buds.
My FFL hates them because he can't sell me the same thing for anywhere near the cost.

Lots of FFL's will not ship to CA.
The selling dealer has to call the CA doj to get the super secret pass word which he has to pass off to the receiving dealer which is used when the buyer registers the spoon. Yay. Now I think CA charges sales tax on from out of state spoon transactions. NV does... |

It's changed a bit recently but Discount Guns for Law Enforcement by Buds Gun Shop (budspolicesupply.com) gave very nice discounts if you were in any way involved with LEO or had been in the past. I think it included military too.

This is an area in which I still prefer to support local businesses. Even if I pay a few dollars more, I feel it's important to support the local, grassroots aspect of this industry as much as possible. We are all in this together, and as the local visibility and presence shrinks, I feel as though local community support will as well. I just hate to see gun and ammunition sales go completely on line, or big box, and lose the last little bit of status the local shops cling to as a part of their communities. Besides, with something as personal as a firearm, it's always nice to go and look at a variety of potential candidates, handle them, and discuss them with the proprietor. It's a fun way to spend a few hours, and maybe make a new friend. Or go see an old one.

And I don't mind supporting the local business, and I understand that they have to make a living. Unfortunately for them, I don't believe they have a right to make a living off a single transaction from me. So I won't be paying $250 for a used and abused 10/22. Or $200 for a used Marlin/Glenfield mdl 60. Or $500 for a Taurus 38. Of course, there is that one shop near me that removes extra magazines from a factory package to sell separately and they have the highest prices around (full MSRP, sometimes plus a little).... unfortunately it doesn't look like they will ever go out of business. They've bought into/taken over management 3 other gun shops in the area..... |

I figured the note about car inspections would get people excited. If you have been through those checkpoints lately you will see that most all of them have the license plate reader that takes a picture of you and the front plate (if there is one) and in milliseconds the screen shows info about you, who knows what but that is what was used for those guys coming back from AZ as the sheriff stepped out of the little hut and they were waived over. Same thing happens to me when coming back from our range in Dulzura and now the guys smile and ask me how I'm doing and wave me by. Same system triggers the portable x-ray truck inspection to rental vans or other box trucks as I seem to have a knack to get caught behind them on the two lane winding country road.
Since CA passed their sanctuary state law and a little later the San Diego County voted to ignore it, the sheriff who works for the county is with the ICE agents who point to the suspect vehicles just to get back at the state? Here's a funny thing I saw Wednesday afternoon while taking my wife to get an x-ray of her shoulder. On the way to the car I saw an emergency call box and the label on the door said "Police", "Fire", "ICE"! I don't think they meant the cubed kind. |
