What is the point of an autonomous race car? The battle bots get tiresome after a few battles.
Who will ever care if one robot car can beat another robot car except the mom's of the engineers that built it. It would be as exciting as two computers playing a chess match. They can pay a chess game in a few milliseconds an mostly have a draw. Whoo hoo! As an engineering toy it is cool toy. Hopefully they will develop some techniques for use in autonomous street cars. But the big car makers have a huge budget, and lots more engineers. I can see the day in the near future when I can't drive safely anymore because of age, the autonomous car will be a great thing. I can poke an app on my cell phone, and a car will arrive, take me to wherever I want to go. When I am ready to come home a different car shows up and takes me home. I will no longer own a car. I hope that day is far off into the future. I will keep driving as long as possible.

Racing is the impetus for developing and testing many new automotive technologies. Autonomous vehicles are already a reality but many people (myself included) don’t trust the technology (yet). By getting fully autonomous race cars into the mainstream, it will lead to public trust of the technology. This is about more than the specticle of racing, it is more about pushing the boundaries of autonomous vehicles in a controlled yet extreme environment. This has the potential to set some amazing track records... robots have no fear and can truely explore the limits of grip.
