My wife’s dad died after several operations on his heart. Turned out he had bad teeth with infections. The infection went to the new valve every time and after 3-4 operations, he passed. He was 54

Let's put it this way, the hospital told me to not see a dentist for 30 days before the initial surgery. Yesterday the surgeon asked me if I'd seen a dentist lately. Might be a coincidence, but there are strong indications that there is a correlation. So other factors figure in as well.

How did I know something was wrong? Well, in this case the infection started at the joint and pushed its way to the skin appearing as a huge boil the size of a half dollar.

So when the planets line up it's your turn. This is the first and only surgery I've had in my life. By mid next year that might be 2-3 more.

I'm going to have some dental work done soon.

Been holding off due to Covid.

I will make sure I take the meds they recommend before dental work.

So maybe one of the Doc's here can explain. Removing the joint, which is 'non-living' material and replacing with a new one. Does that involve a lot of bone removal to rid the area of infected 'living material'?

Very sorry to hear about this Zeke, but try to stay strong and realize it can be worth it in the long run.
It can be depressing after having joint replacement to hear you need it again. I had an unfortunate accident 2 months after my hip replacement. Slipped on ice and ended up fracturing the femur. It was rough when they told me I had to have the first one removed and replaced, along with 4 bands installed to hold the bone fragments in place.
While it was psychologically rough to spend months going through the recovery period twice, I am just grateful that Doctors were able to fix me up again. I always make sure to follow my Doctors orders and take my Amoxicillin before any dental or medical procedure.

Zeke, what does this mean?. Your implanted shoulder joint gets removed?!? What do you do for a shoulder then?. I'm confused (and alarmed). Does this apply to all joint replacements?. What should someone with a replaced hip or knee do before going to the dentist?

MSSA staph likely doesn't respond to Amoxicillin.

Well, to make an analogy, I will have a shoulder wired like a puppet. No, there are no strings involved, but the bones are held in place relative to each other with something called a Prosthesis of Antibiotic Loaded Acrylic Cement. It looks like plumber's tape. (Fig. C). Fig E shows movement limitations on his left shoulder. IOW, right back where I started except I was in a LOT of pain before (and after) the repalcement.

No, it's over. I'm pretty sure I overcooked my shoulder and maybe got it loose, then that's the big opportunity for an infection to hide. And it did. I may not choose to do a 2-stage approach and live with limited movement. I did for years beforehand. Not easy to fasten a belt or buttons, so you wear sweats for your daily attire. To pick up a power tool and use it would be dangerous.

Zeke, Sorry to hear about the infection. Always something I worry about since I had my total shoulder replaced 2 years ago. I talked with a women who's husband was 5 years out was going thru the same problem with an infection in the shoulder joint as you are and was looking to have the infection removed at the same time they replaced the implant.
My surgeon prescribed me a years worth of antibiotics to keep so I could take them before I went to have my teeth cleaned. I should probably have the prescription refilled as a preventive measure.
My surgeon commented to my wife after surgery that the ball was worn off of the shoulder and I would not have been able to use it if I had not done the surgery. I would say I have recovered 95% of my mobility after the surgery and it only bothers me when I get it cold or do something to overstress the joint and muscles.
I am glad my rotator cuff was good and didn't need to have a reverse done.
I also started out with a lady physical therapist who slowly over an hour long session stretched everything out during my first PT session.

No one here has been in more pain than I have for the last 15 years, I kid you not...cancer, injury, etc, get a pass, that lovely young woman that had a lung transplant at Duke, maybe.

You see where this is going, right? Our pain is relative and somewhat trivial.

I had been in pain for 15 years until I found a path forward. Find the path Zeke, don't make any decisions until you do more homework.

Giving up is my in not in my lexicon, nor yours.

Milt, sorry to hear you're having problems with infection. I'd think after 23 months you'd be pretty much in the clear. I had three surgeries, four if you count the scope job, before I quit chasing the "perfect" shoulder replacement. I settled for one that works pretty well and doesn't bother (hurt) me very often. Just keep pushing until you get to where you want to be.

And hang on to your tools. I've still got all of mine, plus a 50 year old Econoline I used to haul a Formula Ford all around the southwest back in the '70's. I don't do much car work these days, but I sleep better knowing I could (at 73) if the opportunity arose. And I always have access to several 10MM sockets, boxes, opens...

My shoulders are shot, 12 yrs carpenter in the days when we used framing hammers and finish hammers. 36 yrs as a Chiropractor, not much different than swinging a hammer except sideway motion with rotational movement which tears up rotator cup muscles faster. This January, I said enough is enough, I got a stem cell injection in my right shoulder and 4 months later, I am not sorry, I am amazed. My constant pain is gone, I can now work over my head and can now sleep on that shoulder. Do I have pain still? yes, at a 1-2 level. Am I happy with the results, yes, just for the fact that I still have my parts that I was born with still around, no metal.

Would I do it again, in a heartbeat. Next week am leaving for a 3 week vacation sailing into BC. When I return, my knees will get the stem cell injections.
