Recommend New Motorycle for an old Guy

I'm gonna do something stupid, but want opinions on what I should really do. This will be dumber than hooking up with a 30 year-old blonde, big titted Gold-digger - BUT CHEAPER.

I know a lot of older motorcycle guys.......Some are selling, some going to trikes (Wings/and HD).....Some to Can-AM trikes, even Polaris slingshot (Puke).....Those still on two wheels: often the new Wing, HD and even a few Indian........Me, I go against the flow. Always have.....

So, let's say you know a guy 66 yrs old.....Always had MC's since age 13, sometimes up to 22 at one time. Over 700,000 miles under his belt. Worked hard to whittle the herd to less than 10 and got down to 9 when he sold one of 2 collectable Wes Cooley Replic's to Joe Bob recently......Say he recently inherited some money and said he'd buy what he wanted as a last fling.....Already has a good, big touring bike, a great sport touring bike (with 143,000 miles) and a tricked out 780 cc Dual Sport with MX suspension..........And a bunch of vintage bikes......

Say this guy never owned a V-twin and wants something light, fast, good suspension, brakes, wind protection; even a little luggage. Do maybe 5,000 miles/year; mainly local, but some overnight trips into BC and Montana ....No interest in a cruiser or "Adventure" bike (too tall). What do you recommend? Just curious........

Maybe a duc multi strada, or if that's too adv, then a ST4 or 3. They get along nicely and fit your twin, light , wind protection and a bit sporty nitch.

How about a Bonneville with a small windscreen?

I’m very fond of the earlier generation Ducati Multistrada, air-cooled 2009 and older(?)

The 1100S w Ohlins suspension. Most have the optional hard bags and top case. Extremely sporty sport touring bike, exactly what you are describing. I was looking hard at one a month ago but my next purchase is a HD Ultra Classic for long rides. I could not see doing 1000 miles on the MS, maybe up the coast at the most.

You always want to look over a windscreen on a bike, not through it. Stock windscreens on Harley touring bikes suck but the aftermarket shorter, sculpted ones are supposedly a big improvement wrt wind buffeting. You pick the height based on your head height sitting on the bike.

The new ones are taller. The air-cooled bike fits me fine and I only have a 31” inseam.

Not really a highway cruiser but a nice around-town classic.

The first thing that came to my mind with your criterion was Suzuki V Strom.

True, but there are plenty of well cared for examples to be had. He didn't specify a new bike.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I had my heart set on a ST3 or ST4S for years, but many say not that comfortable on a long day. I've never owned a Ducatic.....Motion and Don Ro had me talked into a 1100 HyperMotard last year?

Regarding the weather protection: I was some protection. A naked bike on the highway can really wear you out. Our last 2 summers have been really warm and big windshields/fairings block too much of the breeze on a hot day.

Want a vtwin and never owned a Duc? I think it HAS to be a Duc. Agree with Speeder on the Multistrada. A low mile well cared for model with the 1000 dual plug engine would be my choice.

An ST is a fantastically comfortable exactly ergonomically correct bike.

Problem is that it locks you in to one single riding position, which, regardless how comfortable, become very uncomfortable if you cannot even adjust your position a few inches during the day, so, I have to agree, from my experience an ST is TERRIBLE for long trips.

Honda Africa Twin 1000

https://global.honda/newsroom/news/2015/2151016eng-crf1000l.html

A very good friend has one and loves it. He had the Suz VStrom 650 prior. He does several local-ish jaunts throughout the year, then a long 4000-ish mile trip in summer from Az to South Dakota via wherever-the-hell-strikes-his-fancy then back.
He's 5'10 ~170 el bees, attaches 3 hard cases and a soft tank bag. Says it rides/tracks/responds very well.

Luv the Africa Twin - Seen them all over Europe for years.....Although I'm over 6' tall, my inseam is only 30" and just too damn tall.......Went to the dealer and tried to sit on one....Had to cross it off my list....

Hey, that's funny! (edit) I've only had 2 motorcycles in my life, both dirt bikes. I wouldn't dream of giving Bob any suggestions on this one.
