Philmont Scout Ranch area in New Mexico is on FIRE!

My son is supposed to be starting a Trek on June 26th. I'm praying they get some rain and favorable conditions to knock this out quickly.

Pictures are from several sources and the information below is the latest Update from Philmont Staff:

Ute Park Fire Update: June 2, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

The Ute Park Fire is 27,290 acres (based on infrared flight) and 0% containment.

On Friday June 1, 2018 Philmont successfully evacuated staff out of base camp to the Colfax County Fairgrounds in Springer, NM. Livestock have also been moved to unaffected areas of the Ranch and are safe.

Our incredible neighbors, the CS Ranch, Express UU Bar Ranch, Kite Construction, and Vermejo Park Ranch have offered resources and are working hard to ensure the safety of Philmont staff and property as well as the villages of Cimarron and Ute Park. We have had a tremendous outpouring of support from Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, Senator Tom Udall and Governor Susana Martinez.

Our staff remains optimistic and eager to deliver Philmont’s expected high-quality program to our camping and training center participants. In fact, staff will be continuing training today to prepare for the program we hope to run, including COPE, First Aid, and other department specific trainings.

Our thoughts are also focused on the well being of those responding to contain the fire. We are grateful for their continued efforts.

Ute Park Fire Info: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5820/ (air quality info, maps, etc.)

Until further notice, we will provide updates once a day prior to noon at PhilmontScoutRanch.org. Thank you for your patience.

Bummer. Our troop is going to Northern Tier in Minnesota instead of Philmont this year. Sorry to see this.

This mornings update.

Ute Park Fire Update: June 3, 2018 at 9:30 a.m.

Fire Update: The Ute Park Fire is currently at estimated 31,000 acres and 0% containment. There are 511 personnel on scene fighting this fire including our Philmont Fire Department, other local Fire Departments, neighbors, and State and Federal agencies.
We can report that the structures at Ponil, Hunting Lodge, Cimarroncito, and Clarks Fork have survived the fire that passed through those areas.
We have gotten official word that base camp is safe and staff will be returning back to base this morning.

Program and Unit information - as we assess the situation we will be working with our leadership and local authorities to determine the extent of program we can deliver and when. Please stand by for an update on this by Monday morning.

Our primary focus remains the safety of our team and the management of the fire. We appreciate your patience as we work through this rapidly changing situation.

From today on we will be posting updates each day prior to noon at PhilmontScoutRanch.org and scouting newsroom. We will post photos periodically on the Philmont Facebook. Please look at these sites for information from us.

Still no word on how it got started, but it’s sooo sad to see it burning, that area has a special place in my heart and is some of the prettiest scenery I’ve been in.

Sadly it’s very remote, much of the camp is only accessible on foot or horseback, so it’s going to be a hard fire to fight.

"...0% containment."
God Bless all fire fighters.

g/f had a condo fire a week ago, three units showed up.
I was so impressed with how helpful they were, polite, and compassionate.
Her purse was inside, I asked one if they saw it, he went in and found it, brought it out to her...it was destroyed but contents were good.
Later, she was missing 3 bottles of meds, I asked again, another fighter went in and found them on the floor...she dropped them as she initially fought the flames.
He brought them out to her, partially melted bottles.
Amazing to witness such professionalism. I attempted to thank each one.
BTW, I asked about the weight of their gear...80 lbs. worth.

That is a great place. Had my first really big Bear experience there at 13 years old.

It's been so dry and now hot in that part of the country, really makes it hard to controll that sort of large fire. At least till nature helps out with some rain.

Fingers crossed for some rain.

Cheers Richard

Cool and cloudy in Santa Fe today. Periodic rain. Some lightning and gusty winds too though. Hopefully more rain up that way. Dry weather returns tomorrow...
