Can't stand watching Tennis anymore - bunch of braying donkeys
I tried to watch the finals of the French open, but gave up... It's a grunt fest. Like a bunch of donkeys braying in turn... It's worse on clay with long grunt punctuated rallies... Probably best at Wimbledon...
Woman are just as bad, if not worse, shrieking at every shot.. Sharapova is pretty terrible with it... It's like watching them give birth for 3 sets... WTF? It got so bad I cannot watch anymore, once you pick up on it that is all you hear and focus on (you're welcome). Kinda wish they'd revert to quiet tennis with warnings and points for excessive grunts... I can see it on some stretch shots, but *every* ball ? I understand there is a claimed advantage to the exhalation, but if you take it away for all if should be fair.... |

Do batters grunt when they swing?
Hockey players? I know football players do and of course porn stars. |

I gave up on tennis twenty years ago, partly for that reason.

There are some shows I never got annoyed by the laugh tracks until it was pointed out here.
I guess we'll see what happens if I watch another Tennis game. The likely hood is low since I mostly only watch motorsport.

I would think it would be very distracting to be on the other side of the net from someone doing all that shrieking. I think if I were playing someone who did that, I would let loose a big grunt just as they were getting ready to hit their shot and tell them I had a "delayed grunt". The USTA should make a rule against it. My 2 cents.

Love that delayed grunt idea... I'd like one of the great players not known for grunting, say a Federer for instance, to start imitating the other guy, and when called on it by the umpire, ask him if both sides could shut up.... But Fed is too nice to do that... watch the summary of the Thiem-Nadal final on rollandgarros.com - it's insane, like a donkey farm. Heeee-haaannnn....one 20 hit rally at a time !

Why would you watch someone play a game if you are able bodied and can go play yourself?
I can see if you are not able bodied and need entertainment. But for myself, I go by the rule that I like to do things, not watch people do things... G |

If you're on one side of the net and you get one chance to pound the ball with all of your might, grunting would create a more powerful stroke and a faster ball.
Now, imagine doing that for 3+ hours. Players like Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem, this yrs. French Open final, unloaded with all of their might on 90% (a guess) of their strokes. About the only way an opponent can even compete with Nadal is to unload on each stroke. This is only one way that Nadal wears down his opponents...physically. The other way is mentally...self-doubt and discouragement. At that level, the athletes are super fit...they need to be in order to pound the ball on each stroke. I played the USTA No. Cal. pro tennis circuit back in the days (80's - 90's), and even I and others would grunt now/then, I don't mind the men grunting, it's the women's screams that bug me. I often mute a Sharapova match and turn on closed caption. BTW, her 2018 net worth: $125 mill. . Federer grunts now/then, just not loudly. In the early days of Monica Seles there was a players petition going around...wanting grunting/screaming to be penalized. Nothing came of it. .
