My big upgrade (as opposed to using free or hand me down mowers) was a Honda walk behind self propelled mower. It's the Schlitz!

Noise cancelling Bose headphones and a random selection of favorite tunes/ recordings from my MP3 player are my wing men.

We have a rental house about 15 minutes away, this year the renters (2 young ladies) let the yard get away from them. I volunteered to whip it, whip it good back into shape~ ended up shocked that I spent 6 hours doing so!
Filled 8 33 gallon trash bags with clippings and debris.

They are good about keeping the house up and paying rent on time, so I don't mind the sweat equity now and then, part of why I could/did retire at 55.

I have two daughters - one is still home and pretty darn cute - one in medical school - doing very well. I used to employ a lawn service until I ran a background on one of the guys that got in my face after I fired him - turns out he had quite a laundry list of offenses. Then I hired another that was doing our neighbors yard - yep was convicted of child pornography - after the third was discovered with a lewd acts charge I started cutting my own grass and will do until everybody is out of the house.

We don't have grass or lawns. Actually it might be easier to cut grass than to maintain dirt. But the water shortage....

We don't have grass either, but the yearly chore of weed whacking all of the natural grasses required by the Forest Service as a fire deterrent if a good sized job.

I also have no grass...killed the front grass when I bought and put in decorative rock...common in the Phoenix Valley.
But I have an acre here and dirt in most of the back yard. The first year I began spraying them with Round-up and liquid pre-emergent solution before they went to seed. After a few years of rains I have very little weeds come up. Thank God!

I also cut about 5 acres, lots of trees, buildings, etc to mow around. 6’ deck on John Deere 4310 compact. Takes about 5-8 hours to look good. I grew up in southeastern VA city and my wife grew up in central OH rural. Our idea of a lawn doesn’t necessarily converge.

Tractor issues last weekend forced me to push mow a portion of the yard....still walked 14 miles pushing that mower and my lower back knee it! Thank goodness the tractor is back to operational.

I still do. How else could I afford my Porsche addiction.

I gave up 2 years ago when the lawn tractor blew up on the front lawn. No way I was going to dump $3 grand in a new one. I have a local sheriff deputy I know do it now. Once a week $40 and he does all the trimming (about 1,500'. They pay those guys so poorly around here I feel like I am helping him out a little.

I repair all the neighbors mowers but i dont mow their lawns. I cut my lawn with their mowers to test them and hardly use mine over the season. But I do have 3 riding mowers and a couple push mowers. Not many people around here dont mow their own lawns. Even the old people and lazy people do. In my area I only know of one rich lady and a state house that get their place mowed.

I used to cut my grass for at least 30 years but I eventually hired a gardener. I still do a lot of pruning and planting but the grass is handled by a guy that does a really good job. I am a perfectionist so mowing my lawns usually took half a day. My gardener does the entire neighborhood so he's much more efficient.

Just fyi, I got rid of Direct TV and went to antenna + YouTube+Netflix. That pretty much covers the cost of the gardener so it was a wash for me.

I cut mine. about 2-3 hours every 2 weeks. Walk behind mower. I’d hire it out but I like the exercise. Same with leave blowing, snow blowing, cutting down trees, ect. I always feel exercise gives me back the hours I put into it so I have a hard time letting go. My 83 year old father still does his own yard work for the same reason although I think he’s the only one in his community who does. He’s helping me replace my deck this year. I helped him do his 2 years ago. Tell you the truth, I might feel a little lame if I stoped cutting the grass while he still did it. He’s a retired doctor and said he missed being outside during a lot of his career.

We pay a guy, I thought about doing it but when you look at maintaining a lawn mower and all the time it would take it’s pretty close to a wash. He keeps all the bushes and shrubs trimmed neat, and makes sure the sprinklers are adjusted, and re-seeds the front lawn at the right times to keep the HOA happy.

Also he will climb and trim my big ass palm tree. I’m not doing that, no matter what.

This seems like as good a place as any to mention this: I bought a 56v (2.5Ah) Ego rechargeable string trimmer last night. $179 seemed reasonable considering the beastmode battery. I trimmed my front yard with it in the evening. Its a game changer for me. My 2 cycle string trimmer has always been a bit cantakorous to get started and is deafening. I usually spend a few min trying to find some non nasty ear plugs before using it.

The cordless trimmer is plenty powerful enough. I hardly used full throttle ever and is about 100 times more pleasant to use. I think the capacity will be enough to do my whole yard easily but I havent confirmed that yet. I have a relatively small yard so it should be fine. When my son gets a few years older I will seriously consider a L-ion powered mower. I think the cordless stuff is finally ready for prime time, for smaller yards.

I live in the middle of the woods, with only about 3/4 acre of grass around the house.
I used to let the grass go until it seeded, probably cut it every 6 weeks or so.
Wifey complained, so now she cuts it every other week or right before a party.

As much as I would like a battery operated trimmer, if they are like my cordless drills, I have a problem tossing them every 5 years when the battery dies.

I am blessed to cut my own grass.

As a kid I used to walk around the neighborhood with our push reel mower and cut lawns.
10 cents was common...a large lawn commanded a quarter.
That's where I learned to love the smell of freshly cut grass...to this day, still love that aroma.
