irnwill turbo flares install/weld
well A fellow pelican dropped his car off shortly before christmas and I finally had a chance to start the project.. wheels are tight squeeze but fit well and look great.. I will update later with more pics but here is a tease

I went with the smaller torsion holes on the flares for a backdate look maybe something like this

here are some more pics of todays progress and yeah been a fan of cleco's for years now
![]() ![]() ![]() I did the driverside today and caught up with the other side but It was more work as the flare did not fit real well and did not measure exact with the other side Which i remember from my turbo flare install. So I spent a bunch of time matching so these huge tires would fit.. Hopefully primer thursday.. then exhaust fun next but not before a bunch of hand sanding

What is the ballpark cost of putting all 4 turbo fenders on an SC?
I need to paint my SC eventually and I am thinking of this as an upgrade since I will be installing front and rear fiberglass fenders and repainting anyways. I would like to do it myself, but fear it is too hard of a project for someone who has little to no bodywork experience.

good question. There is allot of time in it for steel way more then you think. I would guess a body shop would charge about 8-1000 per fender in steel ;glass probably a 3rd cheaper

@ that price I may have to give it a try! Where did you cut the existing fenders before installing the turbo fenders? Any other write-ups or books that you are using?

I done some of this before
1 914 with glass gt flares 1 70t with sc flares my 77 with turbo flares and will rear turbo flares. Each time I do it I think man is there way to much time in it to make it worth while. I would bet I spent 35 hours on each flare on my car (wills has 25 in each now)as it is black and every mistake could be seen easily. you also should remember that body shop rarly weld a flare on they replace whole fenders with the exception of so of these custom shops like matteo used(zeffenhaus) which I am sure the whole paint job with flares and and grafting exceeed 20+ g's. I also grew up whatching my uncles work he owns a 1 man body shop and over the years I have seen him do allot of body work but now flares so it was uncharted territory for me.. oh and click my sig for more pics of this stuff

Hi there: We do flares quiet often, and it is true, it takes time two get both sides to be the same, weird as it sounds, one side seems to be easier than the other.

sorry forgot to take pics of where I finished up but the flares are primed and the car is back in wills hands. I think will is going to DIY the rest of the body work and paint. I hope we can all give him help through this as I know He can do it..

Ben, just a quick question. Do you spray a primer on the metal before laying down the filler, or does the filler go straight onto the bare metal. I have always been unsure about having to prime the repair before the filler or not!?!

I use a chemical etch then filler then buildable sandable primer then block sand and add any filler over the buildable sandable then prime again and block and repeat as necesary.
