What To Use For Final Wipedown

Very occasional painter here. What do you professionals use to clean fingerprints, etc after taping out? I'm sure I put a few prints on the car while taping and I've put way too much sweat into it to have the paint job ruined with fish eyes or other flaws due to surface contamination.

I wiped the car down initially with acetone before any grinding, bodywork , or sanding and did a good soapy wet sanding of the entire car after spot primering the bodywork

I'm using PPG Base/Clear.

Just before paint, wipe down with "wax and grease remover" and then again with a "tack rag" for dust, lint. Then, spray away.........

What "wax and grease remover" do you use/recommend. I've heard some use a 50/50 mix of water/rubbing alcohol.

I"m traveling and don't have access to the number on the can right now. Seems it was something like DCX-330 made by Dupont? Any auto paint store will have it.....Just don't use something like a solvent or acetone that may contain a light oil in it......

That sounds more like the PPG product...

a wax and grease remover is for pre body work cleaning like RM's 900 what is needed is a pre paint cleaner like RM's 901 cleaner .

Would acetone work?

you should never use a solvent based product like thinners or acetone for a wipe down . solvents tend to pust contaminants deeper into the old finish rather then removing them . if the car has a once a year car wax (nufinish)on it then use polycracker first then use a pre body work cleaner then before painting use a pre paint cleaner . sence a gal. of pre cleaner only cost about 20 dollars get it and use it . the biggest thing is keeping the car clean when preping it . that would be never EVER put your bare hands on the car , rolls of tape ,rags and so on . i have fired people for that ! when wipping down a car do a one foot by one foot spot at a time and never let the pre cleaner dry on the panel . always wipe it dry !

Good to know - I'm currently prepping a few panels for my 944. I stripped them all down to bare metal (pain in the butt) and then sanded everything with 320 grit until smooth. I was careful to preserve the galvanizing to the extent I could. I then wiped everything down (bare metal) with acetone and primed. Is this okay? I'm going to pick up some of the cleaner that's been recommended here before painting the primed surfaces (they need a minor amount of smoothing anyway). Just want to make sure there will be good adhesion between the metal and the primer.

320 grit is way to fine of a cut to prime over . 180 grit is best for the under coats to bite into . use a metal prep cleaner for a wipe down .
