The stainless bar has 4 x6mm studs passing through the rear fender holding it in place, you will find 4 x6mm nuts under the rear fenders two on each side, directly under the bar,you may have to remove the undercoating to gain access
![]() Now its been long time since I removed one of those, not sure what keeps it tight on top near center??? Cheers Walt Last edited by walter36; 11-22-2010 at 07:49 PM.. |

Walter36 is correct, directly below the Targa script are two 6mm studs (on each side) that go through the body and are accessible from the wheel well. You will need to remove the rear tires to reach the nuts. You are going to want to soak them with a penetrating oil for a day or so or you will snap the studs. Ask me how I know. In addition there are also several small screws (8 or 10) on the forward edge of the cover behind the targa top seal that will need to be removed. You should then be able to lift the cover straight up and off.
Good luck. ![]() DR |

Hi again :I find and remove the 6mm screws in the wheel area that was ok and find two small in ther door edge area. WHEN YOU SAID TO REMOVE THE TOP SEAL. DOes it is glued to the car or does it has any other screw or thing to be aware of. Should I just pull it off or there is any particular way to do it please advice. Thanks.

The seal is glued on you can coax it off gently. I wouldn't just pull it off unless it is bad shape and going to be replaced.

Porsche also uses a sealant between the stainless cover and the stamped steel bar underneath. You will have to pry the cover up from one side, then go around on the other side- work it back and fort a couple times, the pull it the rest of the way off.
The back window does not have to come out to perform this operation

How to remove the targa outer rollbar
If the studs break when undoing the nuts on the wheel well is there a fix or is it new bar cover time?

no problem- get someone experienced in Tig, to weld some studs on for you. take care to keep the outer cover cool, so you don't get bluing from the heat

Ta. It might make the job a little harder when I get to it, but I will keep my fingers crossed!
