mepstein rustoration
It’s a rainy day here in south eastern PA so I thought I’d start a thread on the restoration of my 914. This was my second 914 and I drove it daily for 5 years while I attended U of D. It was purchased at a porsche restoration shop called Carranza Racing and Restoration in southern New Jersey. By the mid 80’s, 914’s were already developing rusting issues so the idea of buying it through this shop was to have a car stripped down to bare metal and restored to new condition. I thought that this was accomplished but later on, learned that I was conned with a sub-standard build and a pretty paint job. After driving the car for 5 years and through a long hot summer I decided I wanted a car with a/c. I bought a jeep and parked this car in my parent’s garage for 21 years. Unfortunately, the years weren’t kind to the car and paint bubbles and rust appeared on the sheet metal. Recently, I got the urge to get it running. After a lot of internet surfing, I got a recommendation for a small shop that could work on both rust repair and a new paint job. I pulled the car out into the sunlight and towed it to Richmond, VA. I always wanted steel flares and wider tires but it wasn’t in the budget back then. Luckily they are still available and we added that in. Eventually, things spiraled out of control and we added on 911 suspension, 5 lugs, big brakes and a 3.2 engine from a pelican in NJ but since this is the body work section, we’ll leave out mechanicals for now.
Scott Burnett – aka Scotty B, is the shop owner, rustoration expert and paint artist. He works out of his small shop. Nothing fancy, no receptionist or espresso machine, just cars and motorcycles in various stages of repair. I am lucky, this time I found a person who has the integrity and skills to do a first class job and build me the car of my dreams. Not cheap, not overnight, but done right. It’s a car that I plan to keep for at least another 25 years so the financial commitment is worth it to me. So the car has been at the shop for a while. It gets worked on as Scott’s time and my money permit. Still in progress, the following is the good, the bad and the ugly. Enjoy. Before pics - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Awesome work!!! Thanks, it's ongoing...
What was the welder of choice on the flare work? Scotty B ![]() Can you comment on the settings? Butt welded, ~$500/corner Thank you. Sorry, I don't know the real details. He's a certified welder and does the job. 914 metal is very thin and he makes many small "stitches" to keep the metal from warping. More rust than we origionally thought but not totally unexpected. Can't wait until we're done the rust repair and start laying on color. He is truly an artist with paint! Last edited by mepstein; 08-17-2011 at 11:36 AM.. |
