Confusing Silver
Hi,
I have had great help from this part of the forum. I was hoping to see if someone could do a very basic explanation of the color silver for a repaint. This is what I know this far; It looks like I will be happy with Glasurit Paint. I like silver, but not when it is too bright. I have been to the Glasurit web page, and have no idea about toners etc.... simply stated, what do I buy for a system to complete an entire car with a high pressure spray gun? The paint does not have to OEM metallic, I just like silver. Thanks in advance for any help. |

glasurit , RM and limco all have color max chips you can look at . there are 1000's of just silvers to pick from in the color max decks . they are real spray out that BASF does so the color you pick will be the color you get mixxed in the paint can . if you go down to your BASF jobber ( paint store ) they will have chips there for you to look at .
trying to tell you just what tints ( toners ) do to a color is next to impossible . there are on the average of about 50 on a mixxing system . they all affect deferent colors in a deferent way . there is the face of a color ( looking at it straight on ) then there is the flip of a color (looking at it from the side ) . so you would have to see it in person to see just how it effects any given color . |

Thanks for replying.
It sounds like I have to go to the store. I did not understand the web site with it toners and "line 55" etc. From what you are saying, the paints are mixed at the paint store, not bought online from their web site unless you know how to create/mix the colors. |

yes you buy the paint mixxed from the jobber .
today i have to mix color for a 2010 prosche #Z97 tints----------------------------------------- grams 352-91 reducer 41.10 A098 transperant mixing base .50 A372 light red .40 A531 indo blue 1.60 A136 iron yellow 3.20 A125 WHITE 13.00 M505 blue pearl 4.90 M99/21 silver 155.80 so you see all the tints will make up the color titanium silver some colors codes will have a crap load of tints to them and others only 2 or 3 tints . BASF wants there 1st pore to be reducer so that the tints do not stick to the bottom of the can and affect the out come of the final color . over time clears tend to yellow so years from now i would take the color max chips and hold it up to the car and see just what the color looks like if i would need to pick another color max chip that goes with that color i then can do so . this colors standered chip looks spot on so that is the one i picked . |

Got it. Thanks for your help.
Any sggestions for a silver that is not too bright? Perhaps more like the 356' used? Although they may have been very bright when new, I am not sure. |

How about Zinc Metallic (956)? I have this color and get a lot of comments how nice the silver is. It is toned down in terms of brightness so it might suit you.
Do a search for Zinc Metallic or Zinnmetallic and you can see some examples.

Thanks. That is a nice color, as is 936. The 936 looks to be more bright. Perhaps it would be more difficult to paint and color match.
I also like the BMW Silver. I searched for the zinc metallic and found this thread that may be helpful for others looking to paint their car silver; Show your metallic silvery gray cars |

Silver is the hardest color to paint, I recommend having only a professional do a silver paint job who has done it before. Getting panels to match is a nightmare.
Amateur hour, playing with tints for silver is a place you might want to avoid. I have seen this color messed up by most painters. Of course if you have bad eye sight then ignore what I just said and you might be fine with it.
