Need tips on rust clean up and repainting
Hello paint experts,
first time I am tackling a "painting job" since I want to remove old rust, and paint flakes on my pedal cluster that I have removed to replace a clutch cable and to put bronze bushings on. Since I have not done this before thought I would get some experienced people's input and wondering if any one can give me some pointers on how to go about this. My goal is to remove the old rust, chips, flakes, sand it and use a Rustoleum type spray paint. Want to do this on the foot well area also, which can use this clean up and painting. Here is a picture of my pedal cluster bracket with pedals and other connections still attached before disassembly, that I will be doing soon. Thanks in advance. ![]() |

things like this you would take it apart .
then go over to the blasting cabinet with all the rusted parts that need to get blasted clean . after blasting the parts that need to be the semi gloss black get painted with SEM rust shield . 8 parts of flat black to 1 part of there hardener will match the OE look of the part . you can spray it from a preval sprayer . they are dirt cheap at a home store . with hardener you will get more then twice the life out of a coating over any spray can product . |

the SEM rust-shield is a one step proses you mix the 8 parts of the fl black to 1 part of the hardener for the SEM rust shield .
you then pour it into the preval sprayer and spray the parts needed . there is nothing more to it then that . the SEM RS is a all in one product so you spray it right on the bare cleanly blasted metal . there is no need for any top coat because it's a all in one product . Porsche does the OE coating as a all in one product also so it matches that , the flat black color mixed 8 to 1 with the hardener will match the OE gloss of the parts new . having a hardener the finish/coating will last as long at the OE parts do . using a preval sprayer you can use real long lasting automotive grade products with out the need of a air supply . a preval will spray like a spray can you can reuse them along with being able to add hardeners to the product to make them long lasting . just google preval sprayers . sem you can mail order from autobodytoolmart.com or your area jobber (auto paint store) should have it . you can also google that to check it out . ask your friends if they know any one with a blasting cabinet some thing like that to blast would be next to nothing cost wise and you will end up with a totally clean piece with not a spot of rust to come back later on . |

Ready to paint but some concerns
Hello again,
I got the parts blasted, but have a few concerns/questions. Looks like the blast house got a bit aggressive in my opinion, and did the entire parts. I most concerned with the small "Shaft" where the brake pedal push rod attaches (red arrow) and was a machined surface originally, now it is completely blasted! Also the tube barrel part (green arrow) was originally smooth even if unpainted, but now it is coarse due to blasting. Did I ruin this? I am thinking of doing a clear primer on the tube, and not to worry about the rest but just paint as advised here. Appreciate some feedback. Hope I am not being too paranoid this being my first attempt at cleaning old paint and painting. I have attached the picture. Thanks. ![]() |

no big deal !
just take a piece of 180 sand paper and sand every thing . the blasting pits will sand off ez and be smooth again . you do not want to paint right over any blasting pits as the finish will not stick as good as if you sand it with 180 1st . wear rubber gloves when your handling the bare parts . |
