How to tell if fenders have been butt or lap welded.
Hey Guys,
New to PP and looking to get some input on an older 911 I'm looking to purchase. I've been looking for a car with a steel wide body conversion for some time as the basis for a new project and have read enough stories and opinion around the butt weld vs. lap weld debate to conclude that buying a car with proper butt welds is important to me. The seller of the car isn't sure and took this pic to help. Trying to figure out if its a butt or lap before making a fairly long trip to view in person. Not being a body guy myself I'm not really sure from the pic. Anyone else have any input or other ideas that could be helpful in determining what we're looking at here? Thanks in advance. ![]() |

Picture is pretty hard to tell with the undercoat, but it looks like a butt weld to me.

@3literpwr: thanks for the quick response. I'm going to check it out in person. Will report back with the verdict!
