That is an odd engine number as it is not listed as being used in a 356. Pictures may help. It the number altered in any way or possibly missing a number? Porsche made a lot of industrial motors so maybe someone put one in a car?

73410 would be a 1600 Normal built mid to late 1958, if that is the number on the third piece of the engine case under where the generator stand fits and directly above "Made in Germany". The other numbers you are looking for are on the top of the case on the bolt boss in front (front means as you are looking at the pulley end of the engine) of the fan shroud. That is the case casting number and engine type. What do you see there?

13410 may be the sequential number. Judging by the pics it looks like a 1600N from a late A or B. Old fuel pump, black shroud and zenith carbs w newer throttle linkage.

The first respondent had it right. That number is in the correct range for an industrial engine, probably 616/6, late '50s. Common back in the day to use an industrial long block, and swap your cars induction/exhaust/tin/etc. They were never particularly plentiful, but they were around, cheaper than dirt, and usually very low hours. Poor boys version of the kundendienst engine!

I respectfully disagree. The industrial engines had very low compression pistons and cylinders and the camshaft specs were horrid for a streetable car. If the number provided by the OP is the number on the third piece of the case, that is meaningless without the actual case casting number and type number as I described above.
