356 shell with 911 insides?

Has this ever been done - taking a 356 body and transplanting 911 innards into it?

You can cram a 911 motor and 901 transmission into one, and maybe use some suspension parts, but the work to retrofit all that would be *really* expensive.

I believe one of the replica companies out of British Columbia has done something like that. As I recall, Intermeccanica (or something like that) had a roadster or speedster body with a 911 engine. I believe Excellence did an article on it a year or two ago.

There are a couple of cars converted like this in Australia. I believe Websters in Melbourne have one, and there is one currently being converted similar to what you have described here in Adelaide.

What about the possibility of bolting a 356/ speedster body onto a 911 chassis?

Using a rolling body like this:

There was an article in a recent Registry magazine about someone who used a 912 to make a Intermechannica roadster.. the short wheel base provided a challenge, since the roadster was designed to go either on a long wheel base or vw pan

there was one just for sale on "thesamba" a few weeks back.

it was full 911 suspension and arms and stuff under a 356 chassis. It was all jigged and welded and quite well done. 17x7 cup wheels and big reds...just a really mean looking 356...

it was a "finish this thing" project, and needed tons of work.

I guess my question would be WHY? You end up with neither a 356 or a 911 but you have all the expense of both. Especially those fiberglass things, unless you can get hold of a good replica 550 Spyder or 904 body i'd go the 356 outlaw way. IMHO

Steve Pfeffer [Speed GT / World challenge racer] and generally good guy used to have a green convertable 356 [don't remember model] with a 911 motor and trans. Went like hell.

Why? B/c he could and it was cool and fast.
