Back to a 356?
My first car was a 356 - a 400K miles beater I drove in high school. I've since bought 911s, Boxsters, and a 951. The 356 (in my memories) had a super high fun factor, and I've often thought of acquiring another.
To that end, I test drove one for sale locally. In my area, 356s are not plentiful, and it is very challenging to "drive several" to compare. The car I did drove raised many questions: Was the steering that imprecise? Were the brakes that soft? I know this is qualitative, but are these issues with this car (I don't remember thinking so on mine, but when I was 16 I hadn't exactly driven a ton of different cars) or with the model (am I just too used to modern cars now?). Any thoughts, insights, or suggestions would be welcome.

Nope. Best to get someone who is current on 356s to do a PPI for you. The Registry has a list of people in various parts of the country/world who are willing to do this. If you are buying for collectability, get an open car. Only collectable coupes right now are pre-A and A, which you probably don't want as a driver. Best price will be on a B coupe, best driver would be a C or SC.
More fun to drive a fast car slow than a slow car fast. ![]()

When I was looking, the first car I drove had dodgey brakes and steering. I thought perhaps they were all like that. After all, they are over 40 years old.
However, I have to say the 63 C I finally bought is quite presice through the corners and since I had the brakes overhauled (new disks, pads and master cylinder) the brakes have been very good. Steven
