Mysterious shut down - help
So I get up early this morning all excited to drive my car to work on what promises to be a 50 degree day here in Salt Lake City - spring is coming, I just know it!
I unplug the battery tender and the car starts right up as normal. I drive about 20 minutes or so on the freeway and suddenly the power dies to my radio, goes dark for about 30 seconds, and then comes back to life. The radar detecor dies at the same time and also comes back to life in usison with the radio. Things are back to normal for a minute or so and it happens again. This sequence repeapts itself five or six times and then suddenly the car completely dies as if the key were turned off. Luckily, I'm close to an exit and manage to coast off and pull into a park and ride lot. There are a few lights on in the interior but the starter wont turn over at all. Dead. My first thought is that the battery is dead - maybe the battery tender wasnt connected properly or something? But then again it, fired right up with plenty of grunt and even after I stopped to fill up earlier that mroning and let the car sit for 10 minutes or so it fired right up again. So then I thought maybe the alternator is going out and not able to keep up with a charge? But I don't remember seeing any lights glowing adn it was dark when I was driving so I am pretty sure I would have noticed something. I called AAA and 25 minutes later the tow truck shows up to haul my sorry butt home. But before the guy loads me up I decide to give it another try and see if it will start. A quick turn of the key and it fires right up! No sign whatsoever of a weak battery. The AAA guy pulls out a battery tester - 13.5 volts at the battery terminals. I shut the car off and measure again - 12.6 volts at the battery. Everything looks good. Mystery... I decide to take my chances and drive it back home - perfect, it drives like nothing ever happened. No lights, no glitches, everything as normal. I drive it for about 30 minutes and stop to see a friend of mine at Checker auto and have him throw his test machine on it. Everything checks out normal - idling, under load and engine turned off. I shake my head, drive home and park it in the garge. Now I'm driving the Honda to work - not real exciting. The only thing on my mind now is DME relay issue? I call my trusted mechanic and run it by him and ask about the DME relay as the possible problem. He quickly tells me that if the relay was bad the starter would turn the engine over but it would never start. Since it was as if the battery were dead he said it was most likely a faulty connection somewhere - most likely battery terminals. Whast do you guys think? Any ideas for me? Baumer
