Question VW engine and Trans into a 356?

I just received a 61 356 porsche from my uncle. However, it is missing both the engine and transmission. I have a friend that owns a VW store and will sell me a VW 1600cc engine and transmission. I was wondering if I could put them into the 356 for now? If so, can anyone tell me what parts I would need.
Thank you for your help.

Yea if anyone would know then Harry @ hcpresearch.com would.

Thats cool that your uncle gave you such a sweet car. I remember my first car was the 1969 Kharmann Ghia my uncle gave me compelte with rusted out floor pans :P

However I was on cloud nine to have such a cool car when I was only 14

Now I'm just 19 and still on cloud nine having my 912 heh.

Hello

The trany will need some adaptions to fit. Your 61 chassis needs two nose cone rubbermounts and the U-bar on the rear.

If you can´t fabricate/DIY a used 356 trany would maybe be the faster way to go.
BTW a IRS bug trany is even more fabrication work then you have to refabricate the rearaxle with VW or 924 parts.

The engine is nearly a bolt on. Only modify/fabricating the shrouding and the gas throttle linkage.

The clutch can be a missmatch depending on the partsmix.

Thanks for the info. I gave him an email, and he has a book that tells you how to put a VW engine into a 356 and a 356 engine into a VW.
Thanks again for the info.
