1968 911S Headlights

Hi

If anyone is an expert on 1968 911s I was wondering what are the correct headlights for a 1968 911S Targa

are they the H4s or the H1s with flat glass?

The more pictures I look at the more confused I get

Cheers
Craig

Correct, it's the H1's. Note that there's a pretty peculiar glass for 1968 in terms of fluting, but that's pretty deep minutia.

I'm making H1's and will have them in the market in a few months, but there appears to be some pretty good deals lately on H1's on used ones.

I could be wrong, since the '68 was rather unique, but a friend's '68 has the Hella lenses like the older cars, including the 356 and VWs, IIRC , used.

That is the case for US import cars, but the ROW cars had H1s

How things have changed, back in the early '70s when I had my first 911,
I saw a 911 with H1s. I decided I had to have a pair so I asked some friends who owned a foreign car parts store to order me a pair. They thought I was nuts to spend $105 for a pair of headlights. Still have that set to this day and they have resided
on my successive 911s.

In addition, if you get 000 Magazine, this quarters issue in the "anorak" section it's about early 911 lighting. Mark Morrissey wrote it, Randy Wells photgraphy, and John Audette and I helped with research/technical aspects. Plug for all!

H1’s were a desirable option on RoW cars. U.S. cars, to be completely authentic, were stuck with sealed beams. Although “outlaw” in the U.S. I suspect many owners used them. Halogens were not legal in the good ‘ol USA until 1992.

Cheers,
John

A big thank you to Pete Stout, Eric Linden, Randy Wells and especially you John Audette.

This was one of the most challenging articles I've ever written—definitely not my wheel house. But I'm thrilled with the results. It wouldn't have been possible without the contributions of the folks I mentioned.

I also want to thank Jim Breazeale who read my rough draft.

If you don't subscribe to 000 Magazine, please consider it. You won't find better Porsche content anywhere.

+100 on 000. Classy magazine- and because it is SO nice, my wife even lets me put issues on the coffee table!
I'm surprised when at Porsche events and people ask me what the 000 decal on my windshield means!
