Sourcing 17” race wheels / Where to buy 917 style 5 spoke wheels
Need some help sourcing wheels in California.
Anyone know if Penta Motorsport still make/sell these wheels? If so pricing? Have been unable to get an response emailing their website “info@“ Any other suppliers doing similar wheels? Looking for a light race wheel for a 77 widebody ( with NB trailing arms) 17x9/10 and 17x11/12 Thanks ![]() Last edited by DHE11; 06-06-2018 at 03:17 AM.. Why not get exactly the wheel you want at the size you need. Augment Wheel co will custom make you whatever you want, great quality and great pricing. They've done a bunch of Porsche style wheels in sizes not available.
https://www.augmentwheels.com/ Check them out!

Fifteen52 makes a similar wheel in any size/offset.

Thanks for the responses paddy and Duane.
I’ll have a look at he augment website. Saw the fifeteen52 wheel as well. Anyone know if they are still making the Penta wheel? They seem to be located very close to where I’m building my car in LA. |

Try contacting John James Racing. Jim Hendrix used to advertise Penta Motorsports parts on their site. Maybe since they no longer show the Penta parts on their site, they're no longer available?

Second the comment by KTL. My brother had wheels done by JJR on his project car (search Porsche Chimera on Excellence).

Thanks KTL and Gus,
Love this forum - someone always knows the answer, or knows someone that does.... Appreciate the link, i have emailed JJR to see if they still have contact with Penta and supply them. They don’t need to be Penta, just saw them advertised and was basically what I’m after, being a light 5 or 6 spoke wheel that is 5x130 and strong enough for track duty. I’m running these Simmons wheels below (made in Australia) they are a good strong wheel and 3 piece, just a bit heavier than id like for race wheels. While there are lots of options I’ve read on here and heard there are a few manufacturers that will take the order, but then its several months or longer till ready... and they don’t communicate well. Not good in my situation as I’m overseas and working to a plan to be finished by March. Have a set of light BBS’s already on the car, these will be for a second set. Would be interested to know what’s tried and tested, and available in 17” that you all use in a PCA, POC and the various race classes... ![]() ![]() |

The fiske fm5 is another option that is similar in concept but not an exact copy of the 917 wheel. Plenty of people have used then in track applications as well.
I have no direct experience on timeframe to get wheels built through. FIKSE FM 5 – FIKSE Wheels ![]()

I think D-Zug was making a 917/935-inspired wheel a few years ago. I think they were working in conjunction with Forgeline.

Thanks Noah,
Appreciate the tip. I may just look for rims more available like Joenbloed, Fiske, Forgelines, 1552’s or fuch replicas. Most manuafactures dont list the rim weight so if anyone knows from first hand experience the models which are are lightest and best bang for buck, please let me know. |

My question on these is I want 17's, for better tire selection. It looks to me as though that the extra diameter in the Fifteen52's is in the barrel, not longer spokes. That makes them wheels look goofy, to my eye, in larger sizes.
Let us know what you decided on.

Thanks everyone for the responses and PM’s.
Have been in touch with a few manufacturers now and looking at the options, but will go for a light weight and durable/proven wheel over looks... Duc, Understand your comments on the smaller centre with stepped barrels. I used to feel the same, however they are growing on me and are sometimes the lightest weight option, and on older cars can provide a more of a retro 15” look with the high profile rim that offsets the very low profile 35/40 series tyres? But wheels are a very personal choice and there’s lots of them out there!. This car came with BBS wheels which were modified from 16 to 17” - I’m advised by PO the centres are magnesium (need to confirm that) if so they will be keepers for my autocross/motorkhanas as a little narrower than the 10 and 12’s I’m looking at getting... ![]() Last edited by DHE11; 06-06-2018 at 03:21 AM.. Have been weighing up all the options and thanks for all the PM’s and input.
My car is a new build with modified suspension (Project 77) so with 17x9.5 fronts and 11.5 rears, and custom backspace measurements, i cant really buy anything thats off the shelf. Fortunately i have enough time to get a custom set made up. Found a few good lightweight forged options, so will update once ive decided which way to go... Have looked at lots of options and thanks to everyone who has been in contact and offered to make them or provide contacts to the race wheel manufacturers and shops. |

After much research and procrastination over the details, I have decided to go with Jongbloed’s.
Been in touch with Ryan who has been great and is building me a very light set of wheels. Ended up taking a totally different path on the look/style and will post once they are made... |
