Love those! I was thinking of designing and 3D printing a set that would fit 17" euromeisters.....

I think the white fans will enhance the 80's vibe..... mind you color matched wheels would too.

Thanks! I'll keep it simple for now. If needed, I'll change it a bit.

New brake rotors came in today. I caved last week and bought a set of those fancy two piece rotors Steve Weiner makes for 930s. These are NON FLOATING. For me, this means no more damn clanking noises at low speeds over bumps or potholes. Worth the $1k I spent on them.

Old front brake set up:

New Fancy Rotors:

I also had a set of custom ELEMENT FIRE EXTINGUISHER mounts whipped up in CAD and 3D printed. I like this set up much better that the mount that Element offers. Cleaner this way:

Then I took a few photos of the car. Thought they were cool.

More is coming. Always more.

WHEEL FAN UPDATE:

finally had a second to work on the fans and apply the vinyl livery. This was a simple process, but required steady hands. Would have went smoother if I had a friend with me, but at midnight, that was too much to ask for.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4892/...576ed4f1_b.jpg

Soon after the first shot, I finished up all four wheel fans. They were ready to be mounted.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4831/...0b1eb936_b.jpg

Managed to destroy one of the freshly 3D printed center caps. I am having a fresh set printed in carbon fibre now. Those should never break.

What they look like on the car in different lights:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7862/...43264f6c_b.jpg

Because I broke one of the center caps, I can only run the fans on one side. I'll likely remove them until the new caps are done. But I like how they came out!

I can't help but wonder what they would look like body color matched with light silver lettering??? Hmmm.

More to come.

Cool build man, very thorough. I like your style.

Try the body matched fans, would fit the motif.

danco_ 12-28-2018 08:20 PM

More low light photos. I'll try to get away with tinting the fans in a darker clear coat. Let's see if that satisfies my quest for darker fans. I really dig the way these photos came out earlier today.

Awesome! Are those fans mounted onto Fuchs?

Yes, These particular fans came off a racing 930 from the early 80s. The previous owner would run them on his BBS race wheels or his Fuchs, depending on which class the car was racing in and what the rules allowed for. They use a variation of BBS RS center caps to center lock onto Fuchs. It's a great design. I have some photos of the racing 930 somewhere on my computer.

Fresh Rennsport Systems 930 Rotors are installed.

No more road noise!

Took it to my favorite local Porsche mechanic for OEM things.

Met up with Ryan the week before Luft6 and got a chance to drive his car car and buy some parts I needed. Sorted and tight are the best words to describe this car. Wow. My car feels like a bucket of jello compared to his!

Now he just needs to drive it out to Arkansas in October to get a taste of what the Ozarks have to offer. Good food and great roads!

Thanks again Ryan!

Great meeting you my man. Glad we could turn our internet friendship into a real life, actual friendship.

Re: the Ozarks drive. I'm so not disinterested. I just need to figure out how to make it all work, with VRam swap and all.

Oh yeah, haven't updated this thread in a while.

Did a thing and this box showed up:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...abaebfa9_c.jpg

What's in the box? Oh just a 98 Varioram engine with 20k miles on a recent complete rebuild.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...efa997cf_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c9f7acd2_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fc25664d_c.jpg

I've been out of town every weekend for the last 2 months so no progress has been made on any front. Next step is to get the engine on a stand, start tearing down an the auxiliary systems that will not be used (think power steering pump, ac bracket, factory exhaust system, maybe heater fan system as well?)

Then I need to start accumulating the swap parts (custom flywheel, cam block off plates, modify engine tins, exhaust headers/HEs, single crank pulley conversion, harness adapter, send out ECU for reprogram, figure out what plugs into what, oil cooling, and 50 other things. This will be tedious and I'm sure to give myself 10 headaches in the process.

I think it's safe to say that this is the absolute worst time in my life to perform such a swap, as I am devoting time on entirely way too many things, so I am very appreciative of any constructive criticism and general swap tips you all may have, including parts for sale that will aid in my swap.

This will be fun/stressful and I'm excited.

Amazing build. Did you have a noticeable amount of increased light output from the LED headlights. I was thinking of making that change to mine too.

Yes, the increase in light output is both noticeable and incredible. I will never go back to H5s or H4s, ever. I can drive at night with ease. Once I made the change, I have never thought to myself "man, I need more light in front of me".

They are incredible. Though I do hear whispers that they can be built for considerably less than what they sell for on here.

bweiss1 06-04-2019 06:01 PM

You have the Audette, correct? I was thinking of those too. Good to hear there are worth it.

Yes I have Audette lights.

Looks like he just lowered his prices significantly. Here is one of his sets for sale on ebay. As I understand, he offers these with the fluted lenses for about $100 more:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/303179093605

If I were in the market, I'd buy these immediately, and ask for a lens swap to fluted. These are roughly half the price of what I paid 6 months ago.

DNickel 06-06-2019 10:14 AM

Well if the listing is really for a pair, which there seems to be plural on all the descriptions, then that's a deal I would have jumped at months ago. I just upgraded my H5's and bought H4 lights and LED bulbs (not the cheap kind) for just a fraction more :( His old prices were out of my comfort zone ;)

Apples and Oranges.... I too have John's lights in my 88. The ebay lights for sale are a Chinese knock off to the J.W. Speaker units he has been using. The price is awesome but my personal experience with Chinese LED's is terrible.

bweiss1 06-06-2019 06:10 PM

I agree these are knockoffs. It's not clear in the add but I spoke to him a bit ago and he didnt seem like he was decreasing his prices, which frankly seem pretty fair compared to his competitors.
