C.V. Joint

I am working on my 72 and I decide since the cv joints are looking kinda old.The boots are not torn but tired like an old tire. I decide to reward my self for all the hard work I have done to my car "drop motor replace cluth update idle arms learn alot about cam timing . So I sent my axels out. Mind you the axels were quiet and no play and smooth. Mybee to smooth? Well the driveline cvjoint man calls and says these things are hammerd.I go and look at the and the cages were just beat. The ball dug into the cage . He had the outer and inner part. But not the balls. They looked like my parts but how do you tell. He says he has some parts laying around and he can machine part of them. He says he can fixem for 150 a piece. Am I getting taken here??

Have you had any work done by this shop before?

Just what does he mean he can fix them? I hope that means that he is going to change out all the CV Joints and the Boots.

When I cleaned and serviced the CV Joints, for the first time on my ’72 911T, I found that there were worn spot in the joints, but I wouldn’t call them hammered. They had no perceptable slop in them when they were removed. When I reassembled them dry, with just a little WD-40 on them, they tended to bind.

I choose to replace the worn CV Joints, all but one, and rested assured that these weren’t going to come apart at speed!

I’m a little uncomfortable with this “I can fix them for $150 bucks”, it doesn’t sound like enough to replace even one CV joint, only the boot plus labor.

Well, I'm confused that you did all this work and then sent out your CV's? Anyway, direct from the Pelican Catalog:

CV Joint, 911 (1972-73) C-332-032-02 $90.00
CV Boot, 911/912 (1969-73) A-332-293-12 $13.70

or

Complete Axle w/two CV Joints and Boots, 911 (1969-73) C-332-033-08 $351.40

If your Axles are in good shape, then you can fix them for $227 a side. Or if you don't want to mess with CV grease, then $351 a side. You should not have to machine anything.

What happened to the balls; did he play golf with them! These are precison mechanisms with hardened parts; you can't just mix and match pieces and machine up a new cage in the back of the shop. I'm not sure this guy knows what he's doing. You can buy new CV joints here on Pelican for $90 each plus the boot cost and it's only $351 for a new axle complete with new CV joints and boots. $150 per axle for what I consider a make shift repair doesn't seem too wise. If it were me I'd get my parts back and take it somewhere else or do it myself. It's not a hard repair, just dirty and greasy. Good luck, Jim

I took the axels to the shop because I didnt want to grease all over my house. This guy seems know Porsche. He said it looks like a Porsche axel to me. I think he is talking filing the edges I am not sure. He mentioned a Local Porsche shop here in Portland that is a client of the shop.

IMHO, you shouldn't replace just "portions" of a CV joint, not with "parts laying around", and they should not be "re-machined" (although there are companies that will re-machine the cage and races, use over-size balls and call them rebuilt), certainly not on MY car. Tell him you want the entire units back and evaluate them (hopefully they'll really be yours) yourself, wear on any on the parts will be obvious. If they're worn replace the entire joint, if they're not worn, clean, re-grease, use new boots and put them back on. Yes, it's a dirty job, but taking them off and putting them back on is the hardest part and you're doing that yourself anyway, or find a different "driveline cvjoint man", unfortunately no-one is going to be able to replace them correctly for $150 per axle.

Im with you guys. I dont like this guy. When I droped the AXLE off,it was going to be like 40 bucks plus boots I thought it was a good deal at the time. Now not so much. I think he had new cages or races and new balls.
