the x-faktory 73.5 w/2.7 project

Just received this beautiful 73.5 911. It currently has a 2.7 CIS engine installed. It runs great and the leakdown was excellent. A really nice car.........however, it is going to get even better.... dropped the engine today and while the car is getting some work done, I'm tearing into the engine and rebuilding it.....9.5:1 JE's, Mod-S cams (or approved equiv), 40mm PMO EFI/ITBs, MSD Streetfire, MS2, 3.57 M'squirt, sport exhaust, etc.
One of my favorite engine configurations......

stay tuned

NICE! This car is such a deja vu. Exactly what my car looked like when I first got it.

Can't wait to see you work your magic on it.

Gordon,
Yes..there is something about this one....just a real straight, nice early car. It will be a bit transformed with the new engine specs....but retain the cool, early vibe.

regards,
al

Another beautiful car getting an awesome EFI makeover.
That is going to be a revving beast.

Almost where I'm going...

Hi Al,
Does the 2.7 have the 32 mm intake ports?
Will you be opening them up, or changing the exhaust ports?
Is the street fire tuneable or will that be handled by the MS2 box?
What HP range do you think you will hit?
Will this be the Dansk twin pipe "sport" muffler?
How streetable is the "mod-s" cam?

Seriously curious,
Chris

Chris,
This is an S engine and has 35/35 ports and i will use them as is. The Streetfire is a CDI box. I often use the stock dizzy to supply the tach signal to the Streetfire...the Streetfire supplies the Ms2 with tach signal and I use the MS2 to provide the injection and ignition timing, with the dizzy just distributing the spark.. I don't have dyno results for this configuration, but a similar build (slightly higher compression, slightly less cam) hit 230+on the dyno...I prefer the Dansk 2 in-1 out sport muffler (or equivalent). I also really like the Triad 2 in- 2 out. I have not decided on the cam yet, but i'm considering the Webcam 120/104....that is described by Webcam as a hot street cam....strong mid and upper end performance. I've built this configuration previously with good results and it fits my customers requirements.

Before you decide on cams, etc.....decide what it is you want the end result to be. Do you want ultimate horsepower?, Do you want a canyon carver? What is the goal? Street hot rod with some track time? Autocrosser?

My personal preference is canyon carver....so I tend to lean towards cams that bring the torque on a bit lower down than the S-cams....but that's just me...I could be wrong.

regards,
al

Lol, thanks for the heads up.
More interested in the build. One day I may even get around to installing mine...

After all these years, I think folks are starting to appreciate the 2.7 as a good engine if properly built. I had Henry Schmidt build the engine in my 914-6 conversion using RS p/c and S cams, and it’s very sweet. Just have to properly prep things to get them to live. Even the 3.0 SC engines are old enough that they need to be stripped down and rebuilt these days, though the aluminum cases are nice and stronger (albeit heavier) than the magnesium 2.7.

I have a 2.7 MFI in my 1973. Built by Mark Kinninger of Black Forest in San Diego 20 years ago. Still going strong with 125k miles on it.

I would recommend using something better than an MSD for CDI. I love my Daytona-Sensors CDI setup. It has been flawless and a I get adjust-ability, soft rev limiter and data logging.
