I like them...but Porsche changed for a reason. Gas mileage/emissions and having to keep the car wound pretty tight (noise and limiting top speed). My '89 Carrera is geared such that i never get past 3rd (of 5)...and rarely out of second since most speed limits where i live are 55. The 7:31s were in 2.7 middies and the additional torque of the 3.0 allowed the change in gearing.

Carbs or EFI

You have 4 choices as I see it. PMOs, Webers, EFI or bring your CIS back up to spec.
I went through these choices 8 years ago and depending on what you have to start with as far as Manifolds, carbs, CIS, etc., I suggest you make a list of the 4 choices and list what you need to perform each choice. PMOs will cost $3800 -$5000, Webers are all over the map but remember these are basically 50 year old devices. CIS can be brought back to spec depending on where you are. Finally we get to EFI. There are several systems out there from Individual Throttle Bodies to Single TBs. I chose Single TBs and a BitzRacing EFI system. I bought a box of use CIS parts so I'd have the Intake Runners and Throttle Body. The Bitz system provided the ECU and wiring along with support. In the end, after I installed the parts and electrical, I reached thru the drivers window and turned the key - it turned over a couple of times, fired and settled to a 950-1000rpm idle. No drama at all. I've been very happy with EFI ever since. I have tinkered with the default mapping because I enjoy it, but the default got the car running and driving. Then a laptop is connected and the map adjusted while it is driven (it takes 2 people to do safely).
This thread looks like it started out asking about Intake system choices and I hope that's what you were asking about. Sorry if I misinterpreted. Good luck -

I'll share my experience:

This is a rebuilt 3.2SS engine with the original 98mm Max Moritz C/P. I measured the CR to 9.3:1. Cams are DC20, Ignition is CDI+ (classic retrofit), ITB's are 43mm Triumph from Clay (Closed Course Motorsport), and EFI is converted from Bitzracing (Tony). 43mm headers without heat and Dansk to out exhaust.

I'm at approx. 260HP.

Car is around 2100LB (fiberglass everything). I smoke every 964 in my city and the sound is amazing. Hard to keep the car below 60mph......

Build cost:
Rebuilt engine - 1000$ (diy)
98mm bore and replate - 1200$ (I have original MM, quote is from Langcourt in the UK)
JE pistons - 1000$
ITB's - 1500$
EFI - 2000$
CDI+ - 1500$
Headers and exhaust - 1000$
Cams: 500$

So in total: 9700$ for engine work alone strictly DIY.
