Thanks M&K Exhaust

Thank you Brian for sending me the cap to cap off one of the exhaust pipes on my GT3 muffler.
It did get rid of the DRONE!!!!!

Did not seem to loose any noticeable performance. Did loose some "Cool Factor" of a plug in the exhaust pipe but the wife will ride with me now

Thanks again
W.

Glad it worked for your application! We do have internal caps that are hidden from view if you decide to leave it this way. We're working on a more quiet version that solves all these wife unfriendly sport muffler issues. Some like it loud, some do not, so we need versions that work for both.

Loud and Drone are 2 different things. I have a 68 stang with headers and straight pipes, and I fly a Stearman with a 985, 450 hp that sound like 50 Harley's running those are Loud... the DRONE will kill ya.

Loud and drone are distinct but tend to follow one another. Quiet mufflers rarely drone, loud mufflers often do. It is easy to confuse the two and I have to ask a lot of questions when someone is having problems in order to sort it out. Baffles will often times help if sound level is the issue, caps if drone is the issue.

I have the M&K GT3 look muffler as well, and it drones from 2-3k. What is this internal cap you speak of?

Droning bothers my ears more than anything else. I have a M&K 2 in 2 out and I too had to cap one side. I originally capped the drivers side but had some time on my hands so I uncapped the drivers and capped the passenger side and the muffler sounds better so I left it as such. Don't know why but others may wish to experiment.

The further apart the tailpipes are the more contrast when one is capped. The sound exits and bounces directionally which is picked up differently by your ear sitting in the driver's seat as apposed to sitting in the passenger's seat. Rear facing tailpipes throw the sound behind you which also is perceived differently. Drone takes on many forms due to an infinite amount of variables from the engine and chassis of the car which is why we have several ways to tune the sound of the muffler. I hate drone as much as anyone else and we work to eliminate it from all applications.

Funny about drone. I used to laugh at guys complaining about drone, until I experienced it badly on my 3.2 (3.4). I had the tailpipe off the muffler which is straight through off the turbo. The exit of the muffler was aimed right at the bumper corner, which acted like a chamber.

The drone was literally crushing to my head. Literally painful. My head would vibrate.

That's virtually impossible since it mostly based on resonance in the specific car.

I helped Ben prototype the M&K for a 3.2. Went back and forth with variations on single outlet placement. He used a much longer canister on that mule and I both never had any drone and better, the throttle response was instantaneous and motor rev'd extremely freely, much more so than a production short canister later on. I talked with Ben about it and he said the long canister wouldn't have any effect vs. short but damn if that first muffler wasn't much better than production shorts I've had.

Thank you for explaining. I have had a number or Porsches and I don't think I have experienced it. From the posts of other, it sounds like I would know it if I heard it. I tried to find YouTube videos and came up empty.

Once you experience it, you will know as its incredibly annoying.

Drive down the freeway in four door car and roll down only the back windows....the resonance you hear that makes your head want to explode is a great analogous reference for you. Drone is a nightmare for any extended time....like more than 5 seconds!

That would be my old Dodge Durango. If you made the mistake of just lowering one of the back windows, you might think the car was coming apart. My FIL, an engineer, said it was just bad design. Sure enough, No issue in my wife’s Honda CR-V.

The long version is coming back. I agree with you and we are building a quiet version of the system which will use a longer body. Going to be more expensive but building a muffler that is stock quiet yet performance enhanced can't be done for the same price.

Very interesting, great to hear! The muffler I helped with back in 2005 or so? not sure exactly but a long time ago, was very loud but it had no drone, had a V8 burble at idle getting to F1 scream at 6000+ I would go up and down the rev range all day long just to hear it. Absolutely loved that muffler. Ended up giving the motor to a friend and he sold the muffler without telling me.

I hope Ben has plans for it somewhere, I would want that exact muffler again on my next 3.2. The next motor I'm building though is a 2,7 MFI RS with SSIs this spring. Definitely want something optimized for that motor.

Your headers are pure art.

Thank you!
I agree the experience of the sport mufflers changes the entire character of the 911, really fun to go through the gears, you want to drive it like you stole it all the time!
Yes both sound versions will be available. The mufflers we currently manufacture are considered sport, the new line (both single in and dual in) will be considered street performance. The goal for them is to retain the free flow of the sport muffler but quiet it down to near stock level. 2018 is going to be a year of change for M&K as we add many new products and continue to improve the existing line.

You certainly deserve all the success you have had and glad to see you are adding things in 18. There are really only a handful of aftermarket suppliers that meet or exceed Porsche OEM quality as well as being enthusiasts (so important I think) and you are one of them.
