Moving my shop

After being in business since 1980, and being 70yo, I'm closing my Greenwood Ave shop at the end of September and moving it to Marysville Wa. Been living there for a year. Hopefully I'll be out by the end of October. I have 5 acres up there with a pretty decent shop on the property, so hopefully a few of my customers/friends will make the trip. Just 32 miles/half hour in normal traffic. Still an official tax paying business, but the overhead is a fraction of what I've been paying in Seattle. Hate to leave, but it's time.
8009 103rd pl ne Marysville Wa 98270. 206 637 4071. Going to try to get the old shop number forwarded to my cell, but that may not be possible.

Good for you, John Walker. You have been a constant source of expert advise and experienced solutions to our problems over the years. I trust this move will let you throttle back on your daily efforts, while leaving some time to spend with us here.
Thanks for all the years so far,

Evans, Marv 09-27-2018 02:25 PM

Wishing you the best, JW. Seems like a lot of people on here are dialing back in the past years.
At seventy, you're a better man than most to keep up your good work. I'm with everybody else here who appreciates you. Keep on keepin on.

I’m sure you’ll have no lack of folks still wanting your expertise. A 30 minutes drive is nothing (and enjoyable) in a Porsche to get proper service. Wishing you a great ‘retirement’ in good health!

pete3799 09-27-2018 02:40 PM

That's only 3063.6 miles and 44 hours 56 minutes from here. Can you pencil me in for a tune up?

mo-mon 09-27-2018 02:42 PM

Best of luck on the move, John Walker! I echo the above comments. Thank you for all the help you give to this 911 community.

+100

All the best to the best !

rattlsnak 09-27-2018 03:56 PM

Good for you..! and I had no idea you were of that age.. I don't know why, but I have always assumed you were in your mid 40s!!

DRACO A5OG 09-27-2018 03:58 PM

Best wishes Master John!

I am certain you will be just as busy :-)

john walker's workshop 09-27-2018 04:37 PM

Gotta cut it back a bit so I can get a few of my unfinished projects farther along, maybe 2 to 3 cars a week. Can't retire completely or I'll get fat and die. Looking forward to it, another challenge. Be nice to have some time to do Rennsport, Hot August Nights and stuff like that.

jlex 09-27-2018 05:02 PM

Let me know when you're going to put all those spare Porsche parts on the curb you don't want to pack up... :)

jamesjedi 09-27-2018 05:02 PM

Sounds like a nice retirement. I agree with the keeping busy part - it is a must.

Thanks for all of your input that I have read and appreciated. It means a lot from someone who is DIY with some garage experience.

Thanks!

SkunkWorks 09-27-2018 05:09 PM

Closer to us across the border at least so this is a plus!

SalParadise 09-27-2018 05:27 PM

People will make the extra drive no problem. Smart move. It will take some of the stress off. Glad to see you're not hanging it up and just moving. The great thing about moves is that it usually opens doors that you never saw before and that's a positive thing. Hopefully it still means you're going to hang around here still and not move on from us.

sugarwood 09-27-2018 05:45 PM

A master mechanic is worth the drive.
You will be fine. Best of luck on the move.

Yup.

Hope Mr Walker will spend more time laying down the law in this forum with this semi-retirement !

jamesjedi 09-27-2018 05:55 PM

The above post is true....there can be a lot yak yak stuff on line that someone who does it everyday can provide a more direct answer.

cvlcporsche 09-27-2018 06:24 PM

For those who don’t know John, he truly represents the best of what this hobby is all about. I feel blessed to consider him a friend and client, I will gladly make the drive!

tirwin 09-27-2018 07:35 PM

I had to look your new place up. North of Snohomish? I hope you won’t mind a drop-in visitor if I can get up that way while on a business trip.

timmy2 09-27-2018 09:48 PM

“32 miles/half hour in normal traffic”... lol
When is traffic normal there anymore?
Good for you John, living the dream. :)

T77911S 09-28-2018 02:49 AM

THATS IT!!!
I don't care how good you are. 32 more miles from south Carolina is just too much!!!
time to find a new wrench.

Since retirement I've wondered how I ever had time to work, so many unfinished projects. I don't have any loyal customers to deal with, just the wife .

lpsalsaman 09-28-2018 03:45 AM

Good luck Sir!

billybek 09-28-2018 04:25 AM

Hope your move goes well, John.

There are very few posters on this forum that I appreciate as much as you. Valuable source of good information.

Thanks!

shadowjack1 09-28-2018 04:27 AM

Best of luck. I hope you still visit us and give your much needed help. I for one have been helped by you on more then one problem.

carreradpt 09-28-2018 07:13 AM

Wishing you all the best JW. You are a master of our 911 world and the DIY community. Thank you for all the help you have provided to this forum and me in particular over the years.

You are a good man John. Have a great time and an easy move. Keep on Truckin my friend.

proporsche 09-28-2018 08:08 AM

Good luck John and enjoy the extra time on your projects....you are moving 35 miles ..make sense due to the overhead....i have moved all my shop possessions and tools(not all could ship) across the ponds in container..that was not fun at all.
I have finally settled in Czech Republic and slowly discovering all the parts in boxes after 9 years in Europe;-)
best wishes

Ivan

imaircooled 09-28-2018 09:05 AM

Great to hear John, sounds like a great change for you.

Really appreciate all the advice that you tirelessly dispense over the years...

Best of luck, John. Sounds like a perfect plan.

One of my friends was in a similar situation. He just did not want to work full time at it, but could't just quit doing it. He said he just doubled his prices for everything. That left just the customers that REALLY wanted him to do their work. He made more money, and worked less. Win Win.

Peter Zimmermann 09-28-2018 10:13 AM

John, good luck to you! Post-retirement is full of surprises, like, "How the heck will I have time to do this...or that?"

If you are in a situation similar to mine you will be busy beyond belief, more so than when you ran your "away" shop!

Congratulations! I know what a pain moving many years of accumulated stuff will be for you, but once you're settled in it'll be well worth the effort!

juanbenae 09-28-2018 10:46 AM

congrats JW. I just retired myself and am working on my house to get ready to sell and move to the mountains. im busier now than I was working. hope you have internet on that five acres so we will continue to reap your knowledge here. there's always the search function,,, but who here used that?

Thank you for the update John, I appreciate how well you helped me sort out the 87 Carerra and you'll hear and see from me as soon as I need the help.

Sorry, but as I said - its pretty well sorted out :)

Cheers, Matt

Ralph3. 09-28-2018 01:35 PM

Good for you John, I guess this means I won’t be able to drop by and ask my questions in person. See you next time I need something big. SmileWavy

RedCoupe 09-28-2018 01:54 PM

Best of luck, John. I have enjoyed your encyclopedic knowledge of 911s since I joined this PP group. It seems as though I get to the Puget Sound region at least once a year, so I'll just have to make a detour through Marysville on my next trip! Enjoy your new digs!

john walker's workshop 09-28-2018 02:39 PM

Thanks for the kind words. Not going anywhere forum-wise. Just finishing my last job, an '88 valve grind and webcam 20/21 cams. Then the month of October to clear out the project cars and equipment. Hope I can do it in a month. Got the shelving and parts out already, and several dump runs.

OldSpool87 09-28-2018 03:19 PM

Sounds like a great move and opportunity for you. Wish I were closer to see the shop. Best of luck!

Carl_Boehme 09-29-2018 05:09 AM

Good luck John; Thanks for rebuilding my 915 last week.
