Beach Storage- Potential Rust Issues
My wife and I picked up a great second home with an enclosed locked, alarmed garage. As you can see in the photo below the garage is 1,000 feet from the ocean. How likely is the car to suffer from any rust issues if it is kept long term at this facility. The vehicle is a 1975 Targa (pre-galvanized)
Thanks ![]()

I lived in Hermosa beach for a few years, and had 2 Porsche's at the time in an enclosed garage. I was further from the beach than you, about 6 blocks back. In less than a year I had rust forming on the chrome trim on the car including the chrome rings around the gauges and the headlight stone guards (356 Cabriolet). I also had pitting on the chrome fork on my Italian bicycle. Nothing beyond that, but I was a bit surprised.

Cars up north rust from the bottom up. Cars on the coast rust from the top down.

My 911SC is about 150 feet from the sea. I don't think it has any more rust issues than one that lives inland. Lesser beasts, Hondas spring to mind, dissolve in no time around here. It's in a garage but gets driven around in some pretty wicked storms.

Yea . . . I suspected it would be an issue. I wonder if a dehumidifier in the garage would help.
I hate to put a two car garage to waste.

Wasn’t the SC galvanized? I thought the galvanization process helped mitigate rust.

Yes they are galvanized. I got it repainted about 18 years ago and they sanded through the factory primer in a few places. These are the only places where it's getting rust. Rust from the outside, not the inside. So I think it's the excellent factory paint job that is preventing rust. I spray stuff called Fishoilene oil under the car about one a year. It's smelly oily stuff that displaces air and moisture so prevents rust. Sort of like a cavity wax but it stays on. |

The thing that drove me crazy, living two blocks from the Pacific for many years, was the corrosion on all the plated hardware.
I would recommend once or twice a year to spray all the plated and bare metal with Gibbs or similar. I never had any trouble with the paint or chassis. If you keep it garaged and out of the drizzle, rain and fog, you should basically be OK.

Galvanized of not, they rust. Just ask any 911 owner in the UK if they have rust issues...
