Tea Time: Meet "Em" - belated intro with pics.
We’ve only owned this car for a couple of months, but wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone that has contributed to the wealth of knowledge on this forum. It has been a great resource for me with numerous small projects needed to make this car ours. With some larger projects on the horizon, I have no doubt that most of the help needed can be found here… (have owned a couple of Caymans, but this is our first vintage Porsche)
So, meet “Em” a 1984 M491 Coupe. I was seriously looking for a G50, but ran across this car and couldn’t pass on the opportunity to own a widebody. Being of a “certain age”, these cars are somewhat iconic to me and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. After many weeks of discussion and haggling, the wife and I rented a drop car and drove a few hundred miles to pick it up. We took some great backroads through Tennessee and Kentucky to bring it back home to Indiana. - https://www.flickr.com/gp/timberhawks/vUf11w After getting quite a few small issues sorted, I took the car down to the Smokies to enjoy the amazing roads down there. The car was really in it’s element, and it was a great few days of driving. Long term plans include dealing with some worn synchros and some engine compartment cleanup. My background is musclecars, so I’m taking a deep dive of sorts…wish me luck! Great pics! I wouldn't change a thing, from the sugar scoops to the wing. Well - other than maybe suspension and engine refresh bits. Congrats and welcome.

It's been great, we've put about 2,500 quality miles on the old thing in the last few weeks. Drives great...rubbish when you get it wrong, but really nice when you have things clicking.
Was planning to do a low-key track day with it this month, but the 2-1 downshift is impossible so that will have to wait until I get the trans sorted. I have been talking with Griffiths, and will pull the trigger soon for my parts package. (can't decide if I want to do the wheel well condenser or not) |
Q'moto...welcome to 911 ownership! Your car looks really nice and it's good to know that you as someone with muscle car background got into these things. Seems most car guys can't relate to our passion for air cooled 911's. Also, it's great to hear that your wife enjoy the drives!

This weekend is the 1st anniversary of our stewardship of this fine machine. Have done dozens of small projects to repair and improve things without straying too far from the script. The plan for the rest of the summer is to put the ToDo List on hold as much as possible, and simply just drive it...

You are right on the mark. Wife and I dated in high school...graduated in 83/85. There was a poster of this car in every shopping mall in America I think, ha!

Nice looking car... picture on the bridge is perfect. My '88 is Guard's Red as well.
You're not serious about doing second to first gear downshifts while tracking the car, are you? If so, better have a pocket full of synchros handy. |
I did the griffiths install in a weekend. Dirty and frustrating but not particularly difficult.
I cheaped out and used my old compressor. As soon as it saw the first load, it imploded, and I had to bring it to Griff to have him flush and test the system, while installing a new compressor. If I were doing it now, I'd replace everything, I'd add the wheel well condenser, AND I'd opt for the variable speed fan control. Standard fan control on the 911 is 1) Huh? It's on? 2) Meh. and 3) Damn that's loud. Do it once, do it right. |
That’s my biggest waffle on ordering parts from Griffith...can’t decide on the wheelwell condenser...

What outside temps are you contending with? I skipped the wheel well condenser on account of I don't go out much in 95+ degree weather.

Mid 90s is probably my upper limit. Hotter than that I’ll likely drive something else...
