911 Autocross Pic - Soft suspension?

This is a picture of me driving at a recent SCCA autocross. I didn't know a 911 could lift a wheel on an autocross course. Totally stock 92 C2 with R compound tires (Kumhos). Just thought it was a cool pic. I placed third in B stock that day behind a Boxster and an E36 M3.

Looks more like normal rear engine weight distribution than soft suspension to me.

Yours isn't the only 911 I've seen lift a wheel. That picture makes me want this Sunday to come a little sooner. Our local SCCA is having their first autocross then and I'm planning on going. I hope it doesn't rain, but then again... one of my trophies (second place) is from a rainy day. Congrats on third.

I'm going to be running FP this year. My Stable Energies triangulated strut tower brace doesn't fit the definition of an allowed modification for ASP (at least the way I interpret the rules), so FP it is. Other mods like club sport motor mounts and turbo tie rods were question marks for me too. I've been told I should consider getting a ruling on my mods, but I'm comfortable running FP at least until I get a little more competitive.

Ah-Ha! so thats what my car looked like! I have the same triple black C2 set -up. Only now its lowerd and has big shoes. Looks like you're having a blast! and not to worry about the wheel lift, probably one of the best photos of your car you're ever gonna get! Frame it!

That's just an indication that your tire grip has exceeded your suspension's limits. It's now time to upgrade those torsion bars or springs, and get some larger anti-sway bars.

Ever seen a VW lift its rear inside wheel in a tight corner? It looks like a dog doing its business at a fire hydrant, or in this case, a red AX cone.

Looks perfectly normal to me. The rear squat is acceptable since the outside rear wheel looks nice and straight and isn't falling over. Ultimately looks like your car has a slight push when you pick up the throttle since it looks like your exiting the corner, but that could also be a function of driving style.

I wouldn't change a thing right now until your times are consistant from run to run.

Yup, it's not as bad as a VW Golf hiking its inside leg. Last AX I saw two golfs do the same thing at the same corners consistently. Scary at first, then just hilarious. Lost all respect for VWs that day...

Drew- that's a great pic!

Isn't it better to lift a non driving, non steering tire than to lift a wheel that is trying to help steer the car like a 911's front tires do?

I agree for a saftey driver, but to play the devils advocate wouldn't the steering effort and front end be lighter because of inertial transfer? I think understeer is usually faster than oversteer because momentum isn't lost in the bearings and tire scrub.

It can happen. Here I am raising a leg trying to get back in shape after coming through a turn a little too hot!

I saved the spin, but trashed my lap time. After this, it became apparent that for AX, slower is faster!

I'm not sure that a 911 could lift a rear tire, or at least I've never seen it before. Econoboxes are usually the ones that do that. Besides, it's not like I had a choice on which wheel to lift!

Maybe I need to get rid of my passenger next time, but my wife might not appreciate that (she's the passenger in the picture and also co-drives with me).

Your car seems to have the perfect setup. The only way your inside front tire could lift off is if you had enough tire grip on the outside to make it happen...awsome!

Looks good Drew! Anything under about two inches of front wheel lift under hard acceleration out of a corner is normal for a well set up 911. Any more than that and you might want to tighten your rear sway bar a bit.

Will, you are right about triangulated front brace, turbo tie rods and club sport motor mounts not being allowed in ASP on an '82SC. You can run slicks in FP though!

I have never seen a 911 lift the rear up unless it's jumping a curb like this.

Dutchie, that Martini one is awesome. That the wheels are lifting and the car is going fast enough to depress the lightweight hood is just...

...great!
