Rough running Porsche
Hi,
I just bought a 68' 911E targa. It was bought via an auction as a project. Anyway, here is the situation: The car starts fine, runs very rough and tends to backfire when decelerating. I had someone test drive the car prior to buying it and they said that after it took a considerable long time to warm up, it ran "ok". My experience thus far has been that it feels like it has no power. The car did sit for a while, only being started every once in a while. . I am assuming the engine would inevitably need a rebuild but I was hoping to get a little use our of it prior to doing that. This is what I plan to do thus far. put some gas treatment in for the old fuel change plugs, wires, cap and rotor. perhaps rebuild the carbs. The only noise I can here in the motor is a slight valve noise but it might also be a leak in the manifold. Any ideas? Thanks all. ![]() |

drain the fuel and do a tune up/oil change.
the warm up time will be shorter when you get the muddy old oil out. cool car. enjoy.

Add gas and air filter to that list. You have got to baseline this car before you start into the carbs. Dump that old gas too if you can, but for certain purchase two gas filters: one for now, and one about 300 miles down the road after all the crap has traveled through the first filter.

Do a leak down & compression test.

Thanks for the advice all.
So how would one get rid of the ten gallons of fuel that is in the tank once I drain it? I installed plugs, it seems to run a little better. but still intermittently cuts out (loses power) around 3-4k rpm. I will install a fuel filter and see if that helps. Thanks, -Arringto 68' 911E Targa |

well there's always satanic rituals with lots of fire, or your local chainsaw, weedwacker, etc. I've got 10 gallons of old gas from my 73 and I think since the octane is down around 40-50 it'll just get burnt on our bonfire.
