Question Lowering A 911?

Hello
Does anyone have detailed instructions and tips to lowering the rear of a 1973 911T?

Do's and Dont's, tips on what to do before taking everything apart?

Thank You for your responses

You'll have to re-index the torsion bars, which means everything has to come apart, which means you'll need an alignment when you're done.

My tip would be don't. It's a PIA. :-)
If it was my car, I get some adjustable spring plates from a later car and use those.

I would get a copy of our hosts book, "101 projects". He gives the most detailed step by step proceedure I have seen to date. Well worth the investment for this job alone. Plus it has MANY other weekend D.I.Y. tasks for you to undertake.

How much of a drop do you want? You can adjust your rear ride height slightly just by turning the rear suspension adjustment bolts if you don't want a huge drop.

However...only the two piece rear spring arms allow the adjustment that warmnent speaks of ( used from 77 or 78 or thereabouts)..and frustratingly...the setting from the factory is off to one side which only allows "raising" the car ( to compensate for bar sag over the years...factory reason for doing this).
Do a search for "spring plate angle calculator" and for Thom fitzpatrick...he morphed my long-winded procedure into a nice software package which gives some ride-height setting hints.

My car is a 73 and has the 2 piece suspension arms. I recently replaced my rear suspension bushings, so I lowered my car when I did the job. I re-indexed the torsion bars a notch or two lower than they were, then later raised the rear end up a little with the cambered bolts.

I can see what Will means about only being able to raise the car up from factory settings. When I replaced my rear suspension bushings, I made sure that the bolts were positioned so that I could later raise my car up.

You mentioned:

"How much of a drop do you want? You can adjust your rear ride height slightly just by turning the rear suspension adjustment bolts if you don't want a huge drop. "

Which exact bolt do you mean because i really do not want a huge drop
how much of drop can i get my just adjusting the bolt?

Please let me know which bolt are you talking about.

Thank You

Jtkkz:

Caution...not sure if you got the full impact of the previous posts....

If you don't have the two piece trailing arms...you can't do this.
If you do have the two piece trailing arms..but simply installed them as delivered from the factory...you can't do this ( it raises the car only).

Otherwise...you need to re-index the torsion bars and I wrote a tech article how to do this...later modified by Thom Fitzpatrick into a simple spreadsheet.

OK?

Wil Ferch

Do you have a copy of the spreadsheet or tech article?

I heard it very similar to older VW bug.

My 1973 911 is all original and stock.

Thanks

Go here:
http://www.vintagebus.com/
This is Thom Fitzpatrick's web page.
click on Porsche 911...click on spring angle calculator. My tech article is also embedded.
This will give you target values to shoot for. There are other sites that tell you the mechanics of tearing it all apart and putting it back together...like the 40 teeth on one TB end vs the 44 teeth on the other, and that you rotate one end in one direction , and the other end in the opposite direction...to fine tune the height. Fitzpatrick has another chapter in his web page ("torsion bars")...that deals more with this mechanical aspect.
