Thanks for this.

The plot thickens. Metallics had BC/CC. Straight colors did not.

Surely later they did but OP is cutting color, not clear coat.

Nothing special - I used a Devilbiss SRI pro touchup gun for the red parts, I change the tip out to 1.2mm to make it spray like a bigger gun on larger parts.

Modern gravity feed guns shoot great and don't require much air, and have fantastic efficiency. Most of my paint ends up on the part, not in the air.

Last but not least the devilbiss "dekups" system is a lifesaver. I waste very little product and use very little thinner for cleanup. An absolute game changer for me.

I see you are using BASF. Sweet. I will go with that when I re-do mine. Glasurit is brutally expensive and a medium PITA to get in Akron. UNO ain't free by any stretch but more obtainable.

Yes, I am using UNO. I was going to get Glasurit but I would have to get it shipped and my paint supplier strongly suggested that UNO was actually a better paint for sanding/polishing. All quality products from the same company I guess, and I am very happy with the UNO, the way it shoots, sands, and polishes, is a dream.

Interesting post. While at Rennsport someone commented my Guards Red looked too light to be the correct color.
It’s about an 8 year old repaint that is probably the correct unfaded color compared to what people are used to seeing.

This is a picture someone put on Instagram from that weekend.

Beautiful color. I did not have the huevos to paint my car that color.

I remember an old thread here that discussed the different paint codes Porsche used over the years for their red paint. Sometimes it was called india red.

I remember seeing two red 911s back in the '70s that were completely different shades of red. I was told the redest one was gards red the other flourescent red was india.

Some discussion here check post #58. The Utlimate Guards Red (Wachen rot) Picture Thread

Looks great to me!!! And yes, it is surprisingly light. Even in it's "before" condition my car really popped, even in low light, it's almost fluorescent. Cant wait to see the "after".

There seems to be some disagreement about what is "right" when it comes to many colors. This exercise has really been an eye opener for me.

One thing I forgot to mention was that previously there we dark spots/splotches here and there on the paint. I was never able to polish them out. They sanded out with little difficulty. They were obviously the result of something splashing on the car, but I cant help but wonder if the color change is the result of acid rain or low-ph cleaners over time.

Big D there are so many variants of red i can almost guarantte that most of the resprays are off as it depends on so many other steps you have to get right in the painting process.

They would technically both be a 2 coat or what’s now referred to as a 2-stage process. Red: 1st stage white 2nd stage red. Platinum metallic: 1st stage platinum metallic 2nd stage: clearcoat

Yes I think that's probably right.

I'll be doing some repairs on this car at some point and will probably experiment with a white under the red to see how it ends up matching.

I'll buy into nathanbs' take on the two coat system.

Looked at my 81. No sticker.

I want a damned sticker now.

You are right about that.A matter of fact when you are buying some of the single stage products such as uno depending on the tint they call for a white base.

Just came across this apparently from '74-'75? Only India red no Guards red?

Indischrot translated from German is India Red.

But also somehow guards red ends up being synonymous with Indischrot because the "Indi" refers to the India Guard(?) who wore red coats? Not 100% sure on that.

Pretty sure they are all the same color. I'll see if I can find the time to look through the formulas to see if they come up the same.

Done!!!

Turned out really well - the final result after 30-40 hours..... as expected, much lighter, brighter, and shinier that when I started. I cleaned up the window trims too and the contrast with the red is really nice. Looks like a new car!

Yes india red and guards red same color. Same color as the red uniforms on the buckingham palace guards. Something to do with a campaign in india coming back with the red uniforms and the bearskin hats.

I was asked via PM abut some specifics and true to my usual form I wrote a book on it so figured I'd share the abridged version here:

First off it's going to be important to know where you are before you can get where you want to go - first thing I would do is rub the car here and there with a bit of fine polish and a white/light colored towel. This will tell you if you have single stage paint or not.

Parts of the paint that have been protected from contamination and sunlight, over the years, may be lighter than the surrounding areas. On my car the difference was most apparent on the front bumper (where the bumper was hidden by the "smile" molding) and also under the hood ornament was very, very obvious. The parts that have been protected and preserved will be much brighter.

Once I figured out that there was some correction to do, it was a simple matter of trying to remove enough paint to get to the "nice" paint underneath. I started trying compound first, and found that I couldn't quite get the results I wanted. Perhaps if I tried a more aggressive compound I would have had more luck, but I've found that I have better luck with wet sanding using very fine grits than really aggressive compounds. I first tried 3M 3000 grit trizact foam sheets (3M #30290) on my favorite sanding block, a 3M #05742 flexible hand block. I found this to be quite effective and I think will be your best bet. Although it might be a bit slower than what I ended up doing (2500 grit wet-or-dry on a slightly stiffer foam pad) it will be a bit more conservative, slow going, and less risky.

After this it was a simple matter of compound (again, M105) and then polish, (M205) to finish off. One of my favorite tools is the 3M (see a pattern emerging?) #28354 pistol grip polisher. I did the entire Red car with it, and didn't get out the monster dewalt even once! The pistol grip polisher comes with a velcro pad that accepts 3M 4 inch pads, #30041 for compounding, and #30042 for polishing.

Cheers!!
