Third Brake Light
I'm going to be adding a third brake light to my '77 targa. Now I've heard of the upper '87 light and the lower '87 light. Any pros and cons to either?

Upper block your vision more, but is more visible to cars behind you. I'd suggest a search - there are many messages about this.

Go for the lower one if you prefer an unubstructed view behind.

My '86 has the upper 3rd light. I *thought* the upper one was unique to '86. I may be wrong, but if *year correct* is important to you, double check to see if '87 offered both upper and lower.

If I'm not mistaken, in 1987, the "lower" 3rd brake light is the "periscope"-style light that mounts on the rear (closest to the rear glass) of tea tray tail. Non-tail cars had the light located in the upper rear glass.
At least that's how my car was delivered. If you have a Carrera tail and want your car to look like an '87, then get the periscope. If you don't have a tail, get the internal light that mounts in the upper part of the rear window.

ET Third Brake Light
I have a low profile "ET" type light, used. If you want one
let me know...

I added the upper one to my '85, and I don't find it obstructs my vision.... maybe a little bit for cars way back in the distance, but I'm not too concerned about them if they're that far away. Besides, I've probably already passed them.

Obstruct may not be the correct word, more like annoying having something hanging from above everytime to peek into the rear view.

'87 was the only year with the 3rd brake light in the lower part of the window. Perhaps the "periscope" or "ET" light was used in '87 as well for factory spoilered cars?
The high mount is probably safer but it really blocks rearward vision. -Chris |
