11-blade alternator fan

Lots of talk on the forum about about added cooling with everything from upgraded fender radiators to bumper air scoops. Anyone have any experience with European Parts Solutions Aluminum 11-blade fan? Ad claims it will increase engine cooling and temperature. Our host advertises an 11-blade fan as well. Does it work in improving cooling? Considering it for my 1984 911. As always, thanks for the insight.

The '84 911 already has an 11 bladed fan... only 74-77 had 5 bladed fans.

Some years had different diameter 11 bladed fans.

FYI,.....

'74-'75 cars had 11-bladed fans

'78-'79 911SC's had 225mm, instead of 245mm 11-bladed fans.

Hope this helps,

SCfrome -- as referenced above, many US spec 911s built between 1976 and 1977 have 5 blade fans, and upgrading these to an 11 blade fan (along with removal of the thermal reactors that bake these engines) can help improve cooling. Your '84 should already have an 11 blade fan installed and you should be good on that point.

Since you're inquiring about improving your cooling, let us know if you're currently having overheating issues or are simply being proactive living in southern ca. If the latter, its also worth pointing out that your '84 should have come from the factory with the more efficient radiator-type front fender cooler (upgraded from the trombone cooler used on prior year 911s). The one remaining "low hanging fruit" cooling upgrade available to you is to retrofit onto your '84 carrera a thermostatically controlled fender cooler fan similar to that added by Porsche in the 1987 model year. This mod is pretty well documented and pelican has a technical article (and the parts needed) to help.

Taken from their website:
  • "made of high strength aluminum with a drop of forged steel hub"
Looks like it was written by someone with English as a second language. That starts my skepticism.
  • "balanced and true, this fan will far outlast the failure prone fans"
Uhhh... Exactly which fan from the bullet proof 911 family is "failure prone"?
  • additional 11th blade fan
When the stock fan on almost all the cars is 11 bladed, exactly what is an "additional 11th blade"

"Remeber, a worn fan can cause premature failure of your alternator.""
So they don't have spell check or anyone with enough English to proof what they put up? And exactly how does a fan "wear"? Yes, if you have a grossly damaged (not "worn") fan it can be out of balance which would be bad for the alternator.

I know their website says they are in Miami but it smells of Chinesium. It MAY be a great fan. It may even be an upgrade as claimed.
Until I hear from an authoritative voice like Dave at TRE, Steve at Rennsport Systems, John Walker (quitter!), Henry at Supertec, ..., I would see this as built from smoke and mirrors.

Thanks for all the info. Should have counted my fan blades first before inquiring. The add refers to "unique blade pitch" as well so just checking to see if anyone had experience with this product and its impact on cooling. No overheating problems, just moved to Charleston, SC and anticipating the hot humid summer. Thanks every one.

I just installed an EPS fan on my 87. The original magnesium fan had distorted from corrosion and knowing they can come apart it was time to replace it. Mag is brittle and just snaps. The EPS runs true, has the balancing telltale and has a nice clearcoat protective finish.
While in there check the brushes on the alt, and have a good look inside the engine for debris.
BTW I have no connection with EPS, just my experience doing this last weekend.
Corrosion damage front and back at 160,000 miles.

Forgot to add that I gave it a couple of additional coats of clear acrylic
which was baked in the oven. Looks great.

. . .
Paint will come off the fan. Even the impact of a rain drop will pop the paint. The only thing that will stay on is powder paint.

The old mag fan I painted in 2012 and only slightly abraded at the leading edge of the blades, baking the finish helps durability.

Also you want to spray the fan with it hanging flat. It you hang it vertically the normal "sag" of the paint can subtly change the airfoil shape in an unsymmetrical fashion and people have reported it can introduce a hard to chase down "thrumming" noise.
