Body paint

Question regarding body paint. I purchased a 1988 911 over a month ago. Doing the first glaze and wax now. I’m noticing that some of the color is coming off on my microfiber cloth. What’s the deal? I was told this was the original paint. Has the clear coat worn off or was I sold a respray?

I wonder if it's had one of those red tinted polish/waxes to rejuvenate paint and it's just that coming off. Like this stuff https://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Wax-Scratches-Rejuvenates-Chipstick/dp/B078QVR8GQ

I believe it is a single stage paint if not a metallic.

Or as Bill noted.

Hope it is just the polish stuff. Are you enjoying the new car? It looks nice.

That's what happens with single stage paint.

Disclaimer- I am far from a paint expert but on my single stage original paint red '99 SUV, a little color transfers to my microfiber cloth each time I buff the wax off-just like your picture. That has led me to rarely do it. Just wash and dry.

Maybe you should post that question on the Paint and Bodywork Forum. See if a paint expert like 962porsche over there replies.

If single stage the good news is that you can really buff that sucker to a shine.

I remember polishing red cars back in the day. You'd always get plenty of red on the cloth.

It's single staged, Porsche used it on solid colors up into the 90's.

On a 1988 911 in Guards red original paint IS single stage. That means when you polish it you SHOULD get red coming off onto your polishing cloth. In fact if any panel you polish does not turn the cloth red it HAS been repainted. The majority of the time post mid-1990's if they had any paint work done the shops would use base coat/clearcoat (2-stage) which is technically not correct but is how most painters know how to paint today as that is all that is used in modern cars. These modern paints are also more environmentally friendly so in certain states they are the only paints allowed to be used.

Same as the black on my 88 - single stage, and some black comes off on my polishing cloth.

My ‘87 guards red does the same thing on the areas that are original paint. The areas with the peeling clear coat were clearly repainted.

Thanks. This is my first 911 and am ready enjoying learning about the car and it’s intricacies.

You should read this thread. Deja Vu. Guards Red/Indischrot color correction

BTW I would use cotton, not micro fiber. And what products are you using?

Right ON! If you're not getting red on your polishing cloths, something is wrong!! I've been polishing my '88 the same way for 26 years, and the old, oxidized paint always comes off, leaving a bright finish underneath.

What products are you using on your Guards Red?

Everyone has their personal favorites, and I'm sure they all work well.
For me, it's Meguiar's C2000 Clay, a Porter Cable 7424 with Meguiar's M205 polish, and finally Meguiar's M26 Yellow Wax.
But as I said, every dog to his own bone.

Have fun and Good luck

Thanks. Can I ask what pads you would recommend?
