G50 Noise

Hey everyone,

Well I finally picked up my 89' 930 this weekend and everything is perfect except one strange noise. At low RPM's (below 2000), no matter what gear I am in, a rattling noise comes from what sounds like the tranny. The seller told me it is a common noise with G50 trannies. Has anyone ever heard of this? A PPI was performed and no mention of this noise.

By the way, this is the most incredible car ever.....so happy I finally got my 930!!!

Thanks

Correct - common and nothing to worry about. Best fix is to never be below 5-6k rpms.

I'm glad it's nothing!!!

Now I just can't wait until the weather gets better so I can actually drive the car!

Once I get a chance I will post some pics.

My 89 carrera had a funny noise in low gear when I let the clutch out and I was told that all g50s had these noises. Funny thing happened when I changed the flywheel, clutch, THROWOUT BEARING, g50 upgrade, ring gear, the noise went away. I know now that they dont all make noise,

Nothing abnormal according to what I read. My noise is quiet, but noticable - only under about 2K RPM and only when clutch is engaged (pedal out).

Porsche had a tech bulletin on this...they tried a number of things, with a number of service bulletins... until finally ( drum roll please !!!)...
They used fat rubber bands around the shift linkage at the point where the access cover plate resides. Excellence in Engineering !!

So does that mean there is actually a fix for this?

Is it a simple fix or pretty costly?

Thanks for all the feedback

There's more to the G50 noise than just the rubber o-ring around the shift linkage.

Synthetic gear oil quieted mine a bit, but not a cure-all. The gearbox is just noisy. Low speed gear noise is a common complaint about the early G50 trans.

Here's a copy of what Wil mentioned.

Mine rattles like crazy also. Drives me nuts. My local P-Car Dealer says neither attempts by Porsche to fix this problem did it completely. Can someone give me a $ for this enhancement? I am for anything that will quiet it down.

Yep, mine does it too. A slight graunching / rattling noise particularly at low revs if you come off the gas. I too was told it was totally normal - quite reassuring to find out that it actually is !

It is good to hear that there are so many noisey G50's. At red lights it sounds like a loose chain.
