75 Targa hot rod project

I stumbled onto a lil hot rod project and decide to jump in. As one person described the car, “A relatively unloved mid year car in the relatively unloved Targa body style, festooned with an unloved Carrera tail and an unloved paint color, relatively unloved black cookie cutters”. To be honest I couldn’t agree more but it looked like fun. So this is my 1st 911 and I figured I would share and set up a platform to ask questions.

Welcome! Lots of great help here.

I've also got a '75 Targa, also rescued - lots of fun when sorted.

Pics or it doesn't exist!

First thing I did was wash it as it traveled coast to coast, and the second was to pull all the wet carpet out to dry. A 75 unloved targa leaks a little!

Next the tail had to go, for now I made a simple deck lid grill until the exterior has a plan.

The description is hilarious. I have a '75 Targa, and it's still hilarious. I wish BaT was so honest with their descriptions. Still laughing.

I really, really hope for you that there is not rust under the thick rubber mats in the back or rust under the floor bitumen. You should remove all the rear sound deadening and maybe scrape up the bitumen on the floor. If these areas check out, you should be good to go.

I got it from McMaster-Carr. They have an app which is easy to use and it is a great resource for hardware if you have never used them before.
Perforated sheet is #9255T825
Edge material is #8451A74

You inspired me to go check it out, wanted to get the rest of the old carpet out anyhow. Surprised how heavy the mat is under the rear seat.

I also had some time to install the mirrors that I picked up. A set of Vitaloni Sebring Mach 1 mirrors.

Found a great install thread on here, I ended up using a 3/4 pvc pipe coupling and cut it down. It fit perfect over the steam on the existing base.

Your rear seat area looks pretty good!

I would pull the floor boards and check the peddle cluster. That's a low point in the floor and lots of stuff collects there. The cluster probably could stand a rebuilt anyway.

Check your tunnel fuel lines for signs of leakage while you're in there.

Did this car have AC?

Well, well, well...originally a silver car. Is it a silver anniversary? What's the build date on the door jamb?

Just check under the bitumen tar mat on the floors to check for corrosion. I agree that the rear seat buckets look nice. So you got that going for you.

I’m a little confused by the silver myself. The car is copper brown metallic, which I have found on the mirror posts and the rocker/door sil under the trim. Time to do a little digging I suppose, door jamb tags are removed.

My deck lid had no shocks so instead of buying those I switched to 911R hinges. Pretty easy project, went with 50cm spacing. Not completely happy with the dimensional quality of the hinge, I have a 1mm gap on passenger side window sill and a 3mm gap on driver side window sill.

Powder coating

The head light rings (& windshield trim) are the only shiny items currently on the car. So I decided to play around a little while coming up with an exterior plan. Since I was going to powder coat the deck lid grill I decided to do the trim rings as well. Went with a triple bronze to see how it would look against the satin black.
