Tonight I removed the cheap factory plastic-framed rear speaker grills, which came off in pieces. Pressed the original grill mesh into a pair of VERY nice solid aluminum CNC frames that I got from fellow Pelican si Banker.
The new frames are great. The same shape as the originals, and probably the same size as the originals were before they warped, shrank and cracked in the sun. In any case, they perfectly covered the impression in the rear deck left by the original grills. Jay gave them a nice coat of black wrinkle-finish, so they were ready to go. I'm thrilled with how they fit and look. Yes, I suppose if you are totally OCD concours-nutty, they aren't a perfect replacement. The finish on the new ones is a bit coarser than the old, for example. And they are SOLID METAL, not cheap plastic. But for 99% or more of us, these are awesome. I'll never have to look at cracked and broken speaker grills in my mirror again. ![]() ![]()

Looking for '87 Targa spreaker grills
I tried to contact si Banker, but no response (?). Can you try him for me? I'd really, really like to fix these broken speaker grills on the back deck of my '87 911 Targa. Thank you for any assistance.

Jay (si Banker) makes the aluminum frames in his spare time, and he's often out on the road with his car and can't respond promptly.
When I was looking for a solution for my car, I found Jay's frames before I had heard about Matt's ABS frames. I'd have bought Matt's too, I believe they are a touch cheaper than Jay's. Either one is a great replacement for the broken originals.

Not to take business away from either, but this seems like the perfect thing to post to shapeways.com so that people can order them at will for the price of the print in the material of their choosing. Naturally the grills will be of the same material as the surround and would need to be modeled with dimensions to correspond.

Another hugely satisfied customer with Matt's ABS frames. Very well reinforced and the Porsche logo in the proper font is a wonderful touch.
No sure why we would want to direct business away from the cottage industry individuals on this forum... |

The front speaker covers are the same as used in early 1980's BMW 3 Series as their rear parcel shelf speaker covers..
I went to a BMW wrecker and got some out of a 318....perfect match. Cheers, Geoff.

I made some out of aluminum but it took a long time and I had to spend some money getting the general shape cut. SI Banker has some replacement rear bumper guards (84-89 lighter and smaller) also but he has not shown a picture. Save your old pieces and you can trace around the surrounds and cut your own...or buy them. I think the aluminum is the best buy.

Does anybody still make these covers? Or have some in stock?
Would be very happy to buy two pairs. Have two cars with broken ones. No need for comments. Thx! |

I am also looking for grilles for the rear deck of my 82SC. For some reason I can’t access that thread above related to the grilles that Matt creates. Is he still making them? If so what is the best way to contact him?
