Help with 915 Tranamission Thrust Washer Sources

Hello all,

I have a 1977 911S. It’s had a 3 liter swapped in and is rocking a 915/61 transmission. Doing some repairs on the transmission and have noticed that the thrust washer on the end of the output/pinion shaft is cracked. The crack is on its OD and ID as well as on the surface of the washer face.

So obviously replacing it is necessary. As many of you are probably aware this is a NLA part.

The washer is 30mm bore. 51.4mm OD and 3.7mm width or thick if you will. So I have two questions.

Anyone know of a bearing supplier to source this?

Would stacking 2 or 3 to get the desired thickness be an issue?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Steve Mc.

Thank you. I was hoping to get a new one. Some of the eBay items look as bad as what I want to replace.

I might have one of those thrust washers. Let me check my box of misc trans bits and i'll check the measurements of them. But I recall many of these washers are not pretty looking on the edge of the OD. That's just how they are and not necessarily indicative of a problem. However, I get what you're saying about the face. You do want that to be clean.

I have 3 of these thick thrust washers. Measured with a good set of 0.001” dial calipers

ID = 30.25 mm
OD = 51.59 mm
Thk = 3.71 mm

Here’s some pictures of the nicest one (because I’m a nice guy like that). All 3 have that same look of “cracking” to the thickness of the ID and OD and I tried to capture it with my crappy phone pics

Forgot to mention the last picture shows what appears to be grooving on the face but it’s not. I can drag my fingernail across it and I don’t detect anything

Those marks on the OD-ID of that washer are likely relics from stamping..any sort of radial cracks would be a concern

A good transmission rebuilder in your area can make the correct thickness thrust washer if you have one too thick, they may have an assortment

I'm sure Kevin L's are fine. Another good option is Porsche 911 MFI Parts | Retro Automotive Products | 603-543-1006 -- I have been happy with the 915 parts they've provided to me.

I'd want to understand how your existing washer got cracked. It's a substantial part, cracking not easy.

I would not stack thinner washers. Good luck!

Thanks so much guys. I ended up ordering some from eBay. I’m going to do fluorescent mag particle inspection on mine and the ones I bought. Then use the best two.

Weird that they didn’t machine off that flashing on ID and OD. Maybe it’s like a curl of metal when they cut the washer. Similar to a flame cut.

Thanks again.
