Removing CIS injector holders

are there any tricks here? tried heating them with a heat gun, but just succeeded in breaking off some bits, so i stopped. Might be easier to remove the intake runners, and drive them out from the inside?? thanx steve

They are staked in.

Look carefully at the AL. manifold and you will see a small square dimple mark at the edge. Need to take a file or appropriate Dremel bit and sand the inner lip. The plastic sleeve will then pull out.

I’ve used a small hook tool to help pull. The inner O ring can make it challenging... usually old and brittle.

can you sand the stakes with the runner on the car? looks tricky. do you "re-stake" the new ones? thanx s

You can do it with the runner in the car. Would I do it with the runner on the car? No. But you can.

Use a Dremel to remove the stakes or peens off the old one. It will be tricky in the car, that's why I never did it.

Once the old ones are out you should just take a normal round punch and peen it around the diameter - this is pretty easy. I tried to re-create the factory look by staking or peening with a custom chisel, however it just chipped off the aluminum. The round punch was much better.

I pulled the whole thing and removed them on the bench out of the car. I didn't even have to grind on the stakes at all. Then there's no risk of phenolic debris or metal shavings getting into your engine.

Take my advice even tough I am a noobie..i triied removing with engine in...the sleeves if original as were mine are basically brittle and glued into the intake..so getting the injectors out isnt the issue, but these little buggers are awful. I tried to make a tool to reach in and 'hook" the bottom to pull up..2 wouldn't even budge, the others only one came out in one piece, the other 3 where broken on the bottom edge but may have been that way to start. SO...now everything comes apart to find pieces and get last 2 out. I was going to do a valve and rocker seal replacement next year etc so may as well do it this year instead and address the cis and injectors at the same time. If you do continue, lower the engine partially (lots of threads on that) and try to get intakes off with engine in..let me know how that works for future reference. BTW...I sent the injectors to a small shop in Houston that cleans them, then balances the flow and pattern....sound advice

good luck

The reason I wanted to remove the air box was so that I could put in all new injector holders and new injectors. This is the first FI car I've done more than change the oil or do brake pads, so I didn't really know what to expect when I was planning the R&R here. I really destroyed the first inector holder I tried to remove (#4) and realized that the injectors that were in situ were pretty new and thus in good condition from the PO. They were solid within their holes, so I thought I'd just get the one out that I FUBAR. I think that trying to remove these holders from above is impossible, so I just wanted to get the runner out and get the holder from below. "Nomore's" advice to just pull the rubber boots/sleeves allowed me to do this fairly easily. That sleeve was in excellent soft and pliable condition....which comports nicely with the idea that the holders were also relatively new and didn't need to be replaced.

With the runner gently in a vice, the holder came out with just a light tap on a 9/32 long socket from below. The new one goes in from the top and a tapered punch was just the right diameter to push the new one "home". Ready to finish the project when i get my new fuel filter. Here's a video of the placement and removal of the holders once the runner is on the bench. thanx for all of the advice. steve
