SC Factory Sport Shocks, Bilstein HD or Sport?

I have a 1982 SC with a factory sport shocks, they have green shocks and tubes so they are Bilsteins. My questions would the the equivalent stock shocks be close to HD or the Sport shocks. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chuck

How long do the shocks last?

Hi Chuck, I have the same car with the same shocks and look forward to seeing an answer to this question. I gather you have seen this from our host's catalog:
"The Bilsteins are a great performance shock absorber, and will give you a tighter feel over the stock units. An all-around durable shock, the Bilstein shock absorbers should last the life of your 911. The sport Bilsteins give a bit of a stiffer ride, and are best matched with stiffer torsion bars and a lowered suspension". My car came with option group "M06" which I believe includes sport suspension, and I wonder which Bilstein they used for it.
I was thinking there may be some gain from refreshing mine, but after reading that they should "last the life of your 911" I gather I would not notice any difference if I change them.
The host also states:
"How do you know when you need new shocks? Simple: if you stand on each corner of the car (on the bumper), and jump off, then the car should spring back up to a level and remain there. If the car begins to oscillate or bounce around, then chances are that your shocks are shot, and need replacement."
My car certainly does not bounce - does yours? Curious what symptoms you have that leads you to believe they will be better upon changing.
Our cars are approaching 30 years, and mine is no where near the end of its life - can we really expect original shocks to last so long? Will I notice any difference if I replace them with new units of the same kind?
Having not driven a new 911SC, I'm not sure how close my ride feels to when the car was new.

You'll get tired of the yellow bilsteins in a street car. Green are great.

the oem Green Bilstein's closest replacement would be HD

there are a number of us that use green HD front and yellow Sport rear.

yellow f/r is going to be somewhat hash for street use.

I put Bilstein sport shocks in the rear of my SC and I felt they were a little stiff for the street (I must be getting old!). I took them out and sent the old green ones to Bilstein for overhaul back to factory spec and they were just right.

In the Wayne Dempsey 101 Projects for your Porsche, he recommends replacement of shocks/struts every 50,000 miles or sooner (if you have the bounce). Since Wayne owns Pelican Parts, I am not sure what to believe. The records that I have show that shocks have never been replaced, after 175,000 miles or so I would think they might be due for replacement. Or maybe I just want to spend some money.

Thanks,

Chuck

You could send them to Bilstein and have them re-tuned.
