BMW AFM on a Carrera

Gents

Having recently sold a 1988 BMW e24, I now have a spare Bosch refurbished AFM I was going to sell on but wondered if I could use it on my 87 Carrera?

It's a freshly refurbed item, in a Bosch sealed box.

I'm assuming at a minimum it would need an idle mixture check, but can anyone think why it wouldn't work?

If your Carrera doesn't already have a Steve Wong chip you might want to consider that upgrade; either way Steve would likely know whether your AFM would work on your car or not.

Various BMWs of that vintage use a similar Bosch Motronic engine management system. For example, the DME uses the same timing/reference sensors as the 911 and are a commonly recommended "upgrade" (they are the same sensor, except the BMW wire lengths are a bit longer) because they are a direct interchange in terms of sensor type and plug connection. They are inexplicably cheaper, other than the typical Porsche tax/gouging.

I'm willing to bet that AFM is a direct replacement and all it needs is proper adjustment of the CO level, which is accessed by removing a metal plug on the bottom of it. Actually it appears the metal cap plug is already removed.

Thanks all for the input - I'll give it a go when it's next at the specialist as I'd need them to set the mixture with a gas analyser.

And yes, this item was half the price of a similar Porsche item.

I used to have a SW chip but removed it when I had my car live remapped by the UK leading motronic specialist.

john walker - would you know what the differences are based on the model number? I wonder if it's just the base setting that's different and once it's tweaked it can be used on different motronic based cars (80s Euro GM for example)

No idea since I haven't seen one. Some units have a different plug. Narrower/wider with more or less contacts.

I'll better this scenario (possibly).

From what I've read, Supras use a similar AFM. If yours crapped out, take the resistor board out of one and transplant.
