Preview of the CHicago Spring Fling Fun Run

Well, it was supposed to be 60+ degrees F today in Northern Illinois, but we got a surprise fog to start our day. That didn't deter CStreit and I from going out to scout the route for our regional spring fling.

How's this for a start? Cool for pictures, but we wanted to drive!

It did clear up after lunch, but the roads were still damp and there was quite a bit of traffic as I'm sure everyone wanted to be out on this fine day.

Here is a staged pic of Chris passing my poor NA SC motored narrow body. I did get to drive the turbo...very nice. Thanks Chris.

Here are some pictures of the really nice parts.

And along the way we met some nice folks....(glad I wasn't alone Chris )

Here is one of our stops. Local culture.

And Chris wanted a snack..... Good thing we didn't have any change.

Oops hit the wrong tab...see next post.

Snack time Chris!

I didn't get any pictures of the really nice portions of the route...try handling a radio, camera and a new steering wheel. But there are some very nice parts along the route.

We even got lost looking for a particularly elusive road....but it was all part of the experience...I promise we won't get lost on the fun run, but it would be cool to see 5-10 Porsches (maybe a 356A too) lost in one of these small towns.

We even found a cart track that I will contact in hopes of getting a group run as a distraction during the run. Chris wanted to take the 930 on the cart track, but there was no attendant (not until the 17th). It looks like a very cool track that sees cart competition.

Well, enjoy.............

Nice pics, Souk! You're making me review my schedule for the end of the month. We had similar weather in Southern Illinois this morning, and of course we have plenty of the bait shops too.

Those P-cars are gonna look good with the RUF bumpers!

It was a good route. We even managed to get a little lost, which in this case, was a good thing.

We scoped out one of those drive in old timey rootbeer shops as well that hopefully we'll stop at for lunch.

...and Souk, laugh if you must, but to whom did I give that last nightcrawler?

so I found myself seriously pondering how many laps I could get in on that go-kart track before the cops showed up, then I realized that the charge would be tresspassing rather than "speeding" so I moved on.

The next time we take this route I will be in the tarted up racecar with contact paper over the number decals. I have working lights (hella ralley's), hand signals, running lights working, and it's now got license plates...

(Har har, now all I need is air-conditioning, eh Jack?) T.I.C. of course

So what day is this run planned for?

I think I can make it if its the 29/30 still. Is there a set date yet?

I did an autocross on a little go-kart track, in Utica I think, was great fun!

Yep, the 29th. And the kart track is in Norway, Ed. But the proposed route does go through Utica (if we can find that dang road )

Looks like we will have a good sampling of P-cars....even water pumpers . I'm just kidding, everyone is welcome. The more the merrier...I think there will even be a Japanese car (argh!!!!!!!!!!!!! can you say support vehicle?) driven by one of our temporarily fallen brothers (K****n!...goggles?)

If I can get the track to allow our group to run together, it will be a GRRREAT detour (Although it is just right off the route..visible from the main road). And if we get too excited (No Chris, you CAN'T rent out the track for just the 930 or the race car) there is an ambulance on site There were a lot of old skid marks that went into the grass!

wavey, definitely make plans to come. It'll be nice to meet you in person.

Rob, if you go to the trouble of flying in, I'll let you ride shotgun if the family bails out. But there'll be plenty of shotgun spots. And if you are real nice and have a fat pocket book, Chris might let you drive the 930 (just kidding, I was very fortunate to get the opportunity to drive Chris' car. I pulled over early to hand the wheel back to Chris and he thought there was something wrong judging from the look on his face....I just didn't want to take any chances with his beauty...hey! it just hit me, I got to drive the Johnny Lightning car...wahooooooooooo!)

MORE PICTURES

more pix now that I have time to play around with the files..........

This is Chris trying to coax the General Store chick into the picture.

This is the girl who, as I was talking to the other attendent, said "is that a Porch (intentional spelling)?" She didn't see the other one, but the 60+ year old other attendant said "yep, there're two of them." Imagine that! A 60+ yr old lady in the middle of B.F.E knowing what a Porsche is and not referring to it as a VW or a Mazda!

Don't worry Esther, the chick has nothing on you, nor was Chris interested (do I get points?)

An here is a shot of the speedo position with the smaller diameter s-wheel, ala calspeed.

Edit..Oh, my speedo reads fast so don't burn me with comments about the speed.

A FEW MORE

The Johnny Lightning Car makes my poor narrow body look like a heroin addicted runway model.

You California guys might have your Pacific coast, but we have our river shoreline, complete with grounded barges

And will you JUST look at the graffiti those kids put on that sign! Such a shame, I wanted to show you guys where the secret route is ( you like turbodrvn??? )

And here is one for you NCAA fans. Oh no wide right AGAIN!!!!!

No no Chris. I'm always behind the lense, just ask Heather who is always irritated that she can't find me in any pictures

I've gotten a few couple more interested parties for the 29th. I think we'll have some very nice cars showing up. Good thing I picked up a 256 MB card for the digicam...hope the BBS doesn't crash when I post all those pictures

Great idea Souk,
You can count my 993 in for what looks like a great drive. If Perfect Power gets my car finished in time, I'm in. I will get details from Chris.

Oooh Eric, a 993 cab. Just what I want my lady to see so she can get her mind off of this dang Japanese car she has been wanting.

Esther, from what Chris told me about your driving, I'm staying away from you on that kart track. I'm not as competitive as I think you'll be. I don't want to have to explain how I got beat by a girrrrrrrrrrl (I'm sooo kidding LOL )

Hey "Slow911"...

Good to see you're still around! Check out the thread in the regional forums. In short, March 29th, meeting at Souks in the morning (Oswego).

Oh, I just love the bait machine. I am not going to let KeithO forget that one!

Keith: I wish I could help with the rear main seal but you HAVE to make the drive on the 29th.

Rich
