Distributor Green Wire Splice

Can I cut the green distributor wire and splice in a disconnect?

In truth, I’ve already cut it. I wanted to dismount the wiring harness during my engine drop/refresh. I didn’t know the green wire was coaxial. And I still don’t know why it’s coaxial, unless it has something to do with suppressing radio frequency interference. Could someone explain this?

Mostly though, I need to know if I can separately splice the inner wire and outer braid or do I need to go inside the distributor and replace the entire wire.

While were on the subject, are there any upgrades to my 1979 SC distributor/ignition system that I should consider while the engine is out and everything is accessible?

Thanks a lot!

Robert

Get the 928-wire and replace it. It's Long enough to reach from CDI to Distributor (if my Memory is not wrong)

edit: found it:

Yes it's a coax cable for radio frequency interference. If adding a disconnect in the line you'll need to splice into the new connector. I color coded the inlet and outlet of the distributor plug so as to not mix up the wires. The 928 green wire is great but almost too long if adding a disconnect like I did. Stupid expensive for what it is.

Thanks Guys,

Flojo, I appreciate the link! I learned something today. I found the 928 part on Ebay and did notice that it seemed awfully long (as Rarly mentions). I almost bought one to modify, but decided I had enough length on my green wire to add a connector.

Rarly, I have a HAM radio license so I kinda knew what I was looking at. But I still wanted to double-check with you guys before proceeding. I did as you suggested and added a disconnect. And like you, I was VERY careful not to mix up the center wire and the shield when I fabricated the connector.

These modern waterproof automotive connectors are really great -- work well and are easy to assemble. In the kits I've seen, the instructions always show a crimp fit on the terminals. I don't like that, even if the connector is waterproof. I prefer to crimp and solder the terminals. It may not be necessary, but it gives me peace of mind.

would it be possible to run a regular wire and put a shield over it? Like the plug wires. If you cut open a coax cable for a tv the shield comes out nice. Iv used them for covering bicycle brake cables

My SC had when i got it WIRE NUTS used to splice the green wire together. I drove from Chicago to Seattle without a hiccup. so, its just a wire-go for it! (i did replace it)

My Greeny was toast but at both ends (according to my shop guy) I had intended to repair the open side with one of Timmy's kits and install anew Green wire but instead went with a full new rear harness (6 pin) because some other wires shows ham fisted DPO had been at them too. My curiosity though gets the best of me..if one used the long 928 greeny...how does it connect to the cdi end..pictures?

Wire nuts wouldn't be my first choice, but if the connections are solid, there's no reason to think it isn't going to work. Over the years, I've made plenty of lineman splices wrapped with electrical tape when nothing else was available.

Here's the other end of the greeny wire. It joins a bunch of friends in another connector.
