What's Your Cost of Ownership?

Too much time on my hands today waiting for my fan and housing to get back from the powder painter so I added up 24 years of invoices back to 1979:

$23,654 - Purchase Price 1978 SC Targa Black/Black incl. Tax
Summarized 24 years of invoices - rough groups:
$7200 - General Maintenance Parts CIS Parts /AC Parts/HT/ALTs/Batteries/Oil/Filters/
$2950 - Major Parts - Clutches, Trans parts, Chain tensioner kits
$1450 - Brake Systems - Rotors, Calipers, Lines, Pads
$1245 - Suspension Struts, Shocks, Springs...
$5103 - Blown motor rebuild - parts and labor
$4020 - Customizing Turbo tail, Turbo Motor, other
$1900 - Tires
$2200 - Stereo and Security Systems
$7270 - Shop labor - Clutches, Trans, Suspension,
$1075 - Repair on the Road - chain tensioner collapse - far far from home!
$850 - Paint doors, hood, leather Upolstery repair
$446 - Special Porsche Only Tools

$35,709 over 24 years or $1500 per year.

Gas and insurance not included.
So my cost of ownership (lets say the car is still worth 10K) is $1500 plus about $500 in depreciation or $2000 per year.
68,000 miles or 2800 miles/year so about $.70/mile plus gas and insurance.
What is Uncle Sam's mileage rate - $.36??

Or if I'd just invested that money: $24K plus $1500/year for 24 years - I'd go out right now and buy the new Twin Turbo!!

What is your cost of ownership - higher - lower??

About $18,000 for three years up to the past year, including the purchase of the car. I don't even want to think about the cost of ownership in the past year.

I own the car? I thought it was the other way around. My car lied to me! And after all I've done for her...

I have a Binder stuffed with receipts and records.. never had the nerve to actually add them all up..I've kept every single receipt even the ones for something as minimal as a pack of washers.. Oh Boy!! I'm in no hurry to find out anyway.

I've determined that cost of ownership depends on how much you obsess.... I've been obsessing a lot lately...
Do you really need that new paint job? Do you have to have those Turbo Tie Rods? Do you really have to...........

The only things you really HAVE to do are the 15k mile maintenance and fixing her up when she breaks down.

An avid flyfisherman who was heavily into gear told me his wife once said "I've worked out a spreadsheet, you're down to $87.50 per trout."

Okay. Bought a '73 coupe from an auction. Get rid of 2.4 that caught fire. Install 3.2 engine, SSIs, rebuild tranny with Quaife. Buy torsion bars, elephant racing cooler and lines. Recaro racing seats, harnesses, Momo wheel, lots of bits and pieces. Lightweight flywheel, clutch etc.

How much have I driven it? Off the trailer and into the body shop to have the Carerra flares installed. About two hundred feet, idling in first gear.

How much did THAT cost me per mile?

For me, it's not about the cost but the sheer Joy the P-car brings with it.

I am not sure I care what it costs. I am sure that I could have done better economically on a used 1997 Honda Civic, but then you only live once.
