Fabspeed exhaust/bypass/chip question

Been passively shopping around for exhaust, and I think Ive settled on Fabspeed based on what I read on the BBS. Ive done a search, but couldnt answer all of my questions.

My 88 currently passes emissions with flying colors (LOTS of room to spare) and even with the visual inspection laws in my county, I can get away with changing things (hehe).

Fabspeed quotes a gain of 28 HP at the wheels with a 2 out muffler, cat bypass, and custom mapped chip. I have yet to see any dyno sheets, but Ive got a couple questions for current owners of any Fabspeed products.

1.) The fit, finish, and quality of the mufflers and bypass looks good on the website - how is the "real life" quality? Are you satisfied with the product?

2.) Is there any benifit (sound/power) to paying $250 for a stainless cat bypass instead of simply gutting the OEM cat? I dont want the car to sound like the local Honda's (pissed off mosquito exhaust), and if the stainless bypass will sound better than a gutted cat, Ill spring for it.

3.) Those of you with any or all of the above products - is there any noticable improvement in throttle response or butt dyno?

Thanks guys,

Signed: Desperately seeking flat six growl.

If you want to keep the cat for visuals then gut it and have it jet coated to sruce up the looks. If you don't want a cat, why not go with some SSI's and a Fabspeed muffler? While the Fabspeed HP increases may be subject to dispute, the SSI have definate HP increases with the equal length pipes. I would do the SSI, Fabspeed muffler and take it in for a custom chip made for your car to optimize the mapping. Just thought i'd through that out for thought.

As for the quality of the Fabspeed muffler, I installed one last weekend. The quality is excellent.

The pre-muffler by Fabspeed is a real quality piece. That piece alone deepened the sound of my stock 3.2, and added a little oomph according to the butt dyno. Supposedly, there's a little more "science" to this piece than a straight bypass pipe.

I have the Fabspeed and SSIs on a modified 3.4 '83 911SC. the Fab is loud enough that I have to put 90-degree elbows on the tailpipes to direct the sound away from the noisemeters at Lime Rock, if they're in operation. Quality is superb. Have no butt-dyno answers for you, though, since I never drove the car before doing all the modifications.

The fabspeed pre-muffler is the way to go, HOWEVER, you should be aware that there is currently a major problem with the way they fit.
Hopefully I'll have somthing good to say in a day or two, but I wouldn't order one right now.

See: Fabspeed fit problem?

Also feel free to PM me.

Michael,

Qualtiy is first rate...I've never seen a better quality system. Sound is maginficent, albeit a bit loud with dual-out setup, but I wouldn't have it any other way....intoxicating! System will not save you any weight though as it's heavy duty high quality stainless that is made to be bullet proof. I have not updated my chip so I cannot comment on performance improvements...but nothing dramatic without proper chip mapping.

I'm running their Euro premuffler also....don't know if the sound would be as good without it. I hope to add an MAF and updated chip later this spring.

Overall, I'd say the system is highly recommended based on looks and sound alone.
